Improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene are key development targets as set in the SDGs
Growing evidence has accumulated the positive impact that improved WASH has on the health of people
However, access to water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) is generally a challenge in Somalia, particularly in Internally Displaced Peoples (IDPs) settlements where access to water and sanitation facilities is extremely limited
Without access to clean water, toilets and good hygiene practices, the risk of contracting easily preventable diseases, such as diarrhea, acute watery diarrhea, cholera, and respiratory infections, is very high.
In Somalia, settlements for IDPs are often overcrowded with limited sanitation facilities
Diseases are known to spread easily
IDP families lack both access to water and knowledge of proper hygiene practices like fecal waste handling, proper use of latrines and handwashing with soap
These poor hygiene and sanitation conditions, combined with the high concentration of people living in camps, increases exposure to diarrheal diseases and respiratory infections
Of a particular concern are children, particularly those under the age of 5 years, who mostly fall victim to diseases caused by poor sanitation and hygiene practices.
In the local, national and international humanitarian efforts aimed to save lives and livelihoods of the affected populations in Somalia, Kaalmo Relief and Development (KRD), which is a Local non-governmental, not-for-Profit, non-Sectarian, non-partisan, humanitarian, advocacy and development organization working to alleviate the suffering of poor and marginalized communities in Somalia by supporting them to become self-reliant in addressing their social, economic and political problems, has received funding from German Doctors e.V
to implement a project titled: “Increasing access to safe water, sanitation facilities and hygiene education for Internally Displaced People (IDPs)” in four IDP camps, which are located in Belet -Hawa District, Gedo Region, Jubaland State, Somalia
Against the above-mentioned background, KRD is looking for a consultant to carry out a Baseline Survey of Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in the target IDP camps.
