Headquartered in Borama, Awdal region of Somaliland, the Somaliland Skills Training Association (SOSTA) was established in 2008 as a non-profit organisation
At the time of its establishment, the organisation focused on initiatives to empower the youth in Somaliland; over time, the scope has been broadened in response to the changing needs of the community and the changing context and interventions focusing on agriculture and food security, environment and climate change, health and protection of human rights added to the organisation’s portfolio
The organization has implemented diverse activities/projects designed to enhance youth, women and IDPs’ access economic opportunities, participate in decision-making and access/realise their human rights
This has been achieved by implementing interventions that aim at identifying and addressing the systematic barriers faced by women, youth and IDPs in Somaliland; activities implemented in this regard have included raising awareness on rights of youth and women including educating the community on need to end sexual and gender based violence (SGBV), female genital mutilation (FGM) as well as advocacy for their increased participation in political and economic life of the community empowerments
The organisation operates primarily in Awdal region but has experience implementing activities/projects in all the six regions of Somaliland; interventions implemented are aimed at harnessing the potential of the Somaliland people to improve their socio-economic and political well-being through sustainable, integrated, people-centred development approaches
To realize that vision, SOSTA works closely with the local communities, CSO, government and international partners to ensure positive socio-economic change, protection of human rights and a better environment for the marginalized women, youth and IDPs in Somaliland
Programmes/projects and activities that SOSTA has previously implemented have been clustered around four strategic priorities 1) Food Security, sustainable livelihoods and economic empowerment, 2) Environment and climate change, 3) protection of human rights and Health (WASH) and 4) Organizational growth and sustainability.
