    PhD fellowships in mental health epidemiology at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia

    The Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University is working in collaboration with the African Mental heAlth Research Initiative (AMARI), supported by the Wellcome Trust through the Development of Excellence in Leadership Training and Science (DELTAS) program. As part of this initiative, two PhD posts are available for applicants from Somaliland.

    Purpose: This funding opportunity is to enable African countries to develop excellence in leadership, training, and science in the area of research into mental, neurological and substance use disorders.

    PhD fellowships

          Two AMARI PhD fellowships are available for 2024.

          The prospective candidates will register for the PhD in Mental Health Epidemiology program at Addis Ababa University. However, the doctoral research does not necessarily need to be in this discipline: applicants wishing to complete PhDs covering mental health or substance use disorders from various disciplinary backgrounds will be considered.

     

          Research support will be provided for 4 years

    Eligibility

          Prospective candidates must be medically qualified with specialist training or have at least a master’s degree (with thesis) in Mental Health, Public Health, Biostatistics, Psychology, Social Work or health-related fields.

    The support from AMARI includes a monthly stipend and covers costs to attend the annual AMARI scientific meetings and training courses. Fellows will have local and international research supervisors. However, successful applicants are responsible for all expenses related to visa processing and will be required to stay in Addis Ababa for a minimum of 12 months during the fellowship period to attend compulsory courses and present/attend seminars.

    The following will be an advantage for applicants to the AMARI PhD fellowships: proven track record of research involvement, experience in mental health or neurological care, peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals; proposed research is nested within an ongoing project in Somaliland.
