Course Title: Practical Introduction to GIS and Mapping using QGIS
Course Overview:
This beginner-level online course provides a comprehensive introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, and mapping using QGIS, a powerful and free open-source GIS software. Designed for professionals, students, and researchers, the course emphasizes hands-on practical learning, delivered through a combination of pre-recorded videos and live sessions via Google Meet.
Participants will begin by learning basic GIS concepts, then move on to practical exercises using their own computers, applying these concepts directly in QGIS. The course materials, including announcements, videos, and exercises, will be available on Google Classroom for flexible, self-paced learning.
Guided by an experienced GIS instructor, participants will work with a variety of spatial datasets, completing practical exercises outside of video lessons to reinforce their learning. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
● Explain fundamental concepts of geographic information science.
● Import, display, and export vector and raster data.
● Conduct basic spatial data analysis.
● Read and interpret different types of maps.
● Apply basic cartography principles to create maps for research articles, reports, and presentations.
● Evaluate data for GIS mapping projects.
● Develop concepts to implement simple GIS projects.
This online course offers the flexibility to learn at your own pace, with all materials accessible for one month, providing a strong foundation in GIS skills for real-world applications.
Course Requirements:
● No previous knowledge in GIS is required.
● Have a laptop with Excel installed.
● Having a computer MOUSE in the class is required.
● Having a university degree or being enrolled in undergraduate-level.
● Basic knowledge of Computer Literacy.
● Basic knowledge of Excel software.

About the course instructor
Mukhtar Abdi has several years of experience in GIS/QGIS and data analysis, both as a practitioner and Trainer. He is the founder of TAAG, a consultancy and training firm based in Hargeisa, Somaliland, specializing in GIS and data services. Mukhtar also works as a hydrologist and researcher at the Hargeisa Water Agency.
Mukhtar holds an MSc in Water Resources Engineering with Specialization in GIS and Remote Sensing from the Universiti Putra Malaysia, and a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Hargeisa.
Passionate about teaching and knowledge-sharing, Mukhtar actively conducts GIS, remote sensing, spatial analysis and mapping trainings. He also runs a YouTube channel dedicated to educating Somali students on GIS and data analysis.
