About SOS Community Nursing School
SOS Community Nursing School established in May 2002 at a time of great need for qualified health cadres who have competences to give holistic care to the individual, family and the community, thereby improving the quality of life of the people of Somalia. The school utilizes unique teaching & learning resources that are designed to be a conducive learning environment.
The school has been training highly qualified health professionals who are accredited by World Health Organization (WHO Somalia) and recognized by the Ministry of Health, Somalia as a center of excellence in training and development of competent nurses and midwives who are prepared to use critical thinking in solving patient/client’s needs in the areas of disease prevention, health promotion, curative care, research, rehabilitative services, as well as leadership & management of healthcare services.
Our graduates are the most competitive in the market arena and organizations employ them soon after graduation. This market desire has led our graduates to be in almost every organization in the sectors of health & nutrition in the country.
School Programs
We offer both pre-service and in-service trainings aimed at producing HCWsto ensure the safety of people receiving health services and to maintain high standards of care quality. These trainings are designed to help HCWs engrain the necessary behaviours, attitudes, skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality, safe, person-centred care. By leveraging the growing demand in the health labor markets to maximize job creation and economic growth, these trainings are intended to meet the priority needs of the health systems.
Pre-service training programs
HCWs are acknowledged as one of the foundations and prime movers of health sectors. We offer a top-notch pre-service training to contribute to Somalia Human Resource for Health (SHRH) strategy, to enable the country to attain the Universal Health Coverage (UHC). We train nurses, midwives, community health workers, community nutrition workers, and others.
In-service Trainings
In-service trainings have been developed for the purpose of improving the performance of HCWs across the different levels of healthcare to deliver services in-line with Somalia Essential Packages for Health Service (EPHS) standards and guidelines., The program is designed to strengthen the competencies of health workers in public and private sectors.

Our short courses program have so far benefitted many local, national & international organizations working in the country including SOS CVs, Trocaire, ACF, Concern worldwide, OFDA, SRCS, SAACID as well as Ministry of Health (MoH), Somalia. This year, we are rolling out several training opportunities for both public and private health workers. The training is open to both individuals and organizations.
2023 Training Programmes
This yearly training program (YTP) is aimed at all health facility workers, including technical and clinical as well as management, administrative, and support staff. To address the skills gap and to keep up-to-date with the changing practices in health , we will provide to the market short courses relevant to their practices.

EOC01: Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) Training
Overview
The Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) training is designed for clinical health cadres involved in basic obstetric and newborn care service delivery. It covers the necessary skills and professional behaviors for handling common obstetric emergencies at multiple levels of care, including postpartum infection; pre-eclampsia/eclampsia and postpartum hemorrhage. Elements of essential newborn care and newborn resuscitation are also covered in this course.
Training Objective
The overall objective of the training is to enhance the skills of birth attendants (doctors, nurses, midwives) in assessing and managing conditions related to pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and newborn care to ensure that the health facilities have competent providers who can offer quality EmONC services. By the end of the training, the participant will be able to:
- Identify the evidence basis for EmONC intervention
- Demonstrate understanding clients’ rights through provision of respectful care to client and their families.
- Utilize positive interpersonal communication techniques with clients and their families
- Demonstrate competency in EmONC signal functions
- Demonstrate understanding and use of the clinical decision-making process
- Formulate action plans describing how they will act as role models and work to institutionalize evidence based EmONC knowledge and skills in their own health facilities.
Target
This training benefits for several healthcare professionals including Medical doctors, Nurses, Midwives, FHWs.
Mode of delivery
The training is delivered through interactive physical sessions that include PowerPoint presentations, discussions with subject-matter experts, demonstrations, as well as practical & debriefing sessions.
Duration
The duration of this training is six (6) days (4 days for class session & 2 days for Practical attachment at SOS Hospital, Mogadishu). It will be conducted 13-18 May, 2023.

MCI02: Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) Training
Overview
IMCI is a strategy that integrates all available measures for disease prevention and health problems during childhood, for their early detection and effective treatment, and for promoting healthy habits within the family and community. It aims to reduce preventable mortality, minimize illness and disability, and promote healthy growth and development of children under five years of age.
Training Objective
By the end of the training, the participant will be able to
- Correctly diagnose the common conditions and diseases affecting children. Such diseases include: Pneumonia; Diarrhea; Malaria; Measles; Malnutrition, Meningitis.
- Describe how to manage common conditions and diseases affecting children
- Explain how to measure and monitor growth and development in a child
- Explain how to develop and give relevant health messages to individuals, families and communities
- Discuss the principles of counseling
- Describe how to effectively organize and carry out immunization activities
- Explain how to minimize the common accidents and injuries occurring in children in your catchment area
- Describe rehabilitative activities that are needed for children with physical or mental challenges.
Target
The training can be benefited by: Community Nutrition Workers, Community Health Workers, Female Health Workers, Nurses, Midwives, Doctors and medical students.
Training Delivery
The training delivery method includes interactive physical sessions with PowerPoint presentations, expert discussions, demonstrations and practical & debriefing sessions.
Duration
The program will last three days and is tentatively scheduled for June 4-6, 2023.

MAM03: Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) Training
Overview
IMAM stands for Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition. It is an integrated program to fight back against acute malnutrition. It is a nutritional program designed especially for children of 6-59 months of age and is a very important concept for management of malnutrition. The training will enable the nutrition staff to acquire relevant skills in identification and management of acute malnutrition.
Objective
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Identify the trend of acute malnutrition among children in Somalia
- Determine causes and risks of acute malnutrition
- Describe common types of therapeutic and supplementary foods used in nutrition care
- Apply the admission and discharge criteria for SAM in children 6–59 months old
- Describe the therapeutic feeding approaches in the management of SAM in children 6–59 months old.
- Use of antibiotics (and which antibiotics) in the management of SAM
- Manage the children with SAM and oedema
- Administer fluid management of children with SAM with and without shock
- Identify the management of HIV-infected children with SAM
- Identify and manage SAM in infants less than 6 months old
- Determine the Vitamin A supplementation in the management of SAM

EPI04: Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) Training
Overview
Vaccines are critical to the prevention and control of many communicable diseases and therefore underpin global health security. Moreover, they are widely seen as critical for addressing emerging infectious diseases, for example by containing or limiting outbreaks of infectious diseases or combatting the spread of antimicrobial resistance. The Essential Programme on Immunization aims to strengthen vaccine programmes, supply, and delivery, and ensure universal access to all relevant vaccines for all populations across the life course. A healthy start early in life for all the Somali children, guaranteed through administration of safe, potent and effective vaccines against the vaccine preventable childhood diseases, led by the UHC principles of leaving no one behind. Every Somali Citizen: mainly the children and women, enjoy the highest standard of health and quality of life and free from all vaccine preventable diseases.
Objectives
By the end of the training, the participant will be able to:
- Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes to delivering safe basic immunizations.
- To reduce morbidity and mortality from six major childhood diseases, i.e. measles, tuberculosis, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis and diphtheria by immunizing all children
- To promote national self-reliance in delivering immunization services within the comprehensive health service, and
- To promote regional self-reliance in vaccine production and quality control.
Target
The training is designed for the following health professionals: Nurses, Midwives, Clinical officers, Auxiliary nurses, Community Nutrition Workers, Community Health Workers, Female Health Workers, Doctors and Medical students.

MCT05: Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission (PMTCT) Training
Overview
Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) program offer a range of services for women of reproductive age living with or at risk of contracting the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in order to maintain their health and to protect their infants from acquiring HIV. The primary aim of the PMTCT programme was to decrease the number of HIV infected babies born to HIV positive mothers through empowering individuals, families, and communities to make informed choices to prevent HIV transmission and prevent unintended pregnancies.
Objectives
At the end of the training, the learner will be able to:
- Identify pregnant women who are HIV positive
- Ensure HIV-positive pregnant women enroll in the PMTCT programme
- Assess according to the WHO clinical staging guideline.
- Encourage repeat HIV testing not later than 34 weeks during pregnancy
- Primary prevention counselling and support for HIV negative pregnant women
- Positive prevention counselling
- Provide individualized psychosocial support
- AZT prescribed by a registered health professional (in line with the relevant legislation and regulations) from 28 weeks gestation
- HAART for pregnant women with indications for such treatment.
- Safe infant feeding counselling
Target
The target audience for the training include: Doctors, Midwives, Nurses, Medical students and Auxiliaries.

STI06: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Training
Overview
This training course is intended for in-service training for people responsible for STI management at any first-level health facility, such as a health centre, district hospital, mission hospital or STI clinic. It is comprised of eight modules, including a guide for trainers: Introduction to STI prevention and control; Introducing STI syndromic case management; History-taking and examination; Diagnosis and treatment; Educating and counselling the patient; Partner management; Recording and development plan.
Training Objectives
By the end of this training, the participant will be able to:
- Understand about the magnitude of STI/RTI problem in the community and country;
- Understand about the seriousness of complications of common STI/RTI, if left untreated and its long-term implications on health, including reproductive health;
- Describe the STI syndromic case management approach
- Perform history taking and clinical examination of clients for STI/RTI;
- Diagnose and treat common STI/RTI by using given flowcharts based on the infrastructure, facilities and availability of drugs at PHC;
- Educate and counsel STI/RTI clients about prevention and complete treatment of STI/RTI;
- Treat partners of clients diagnosed with STI/RTI;
- Provide treatment and counseling for STI/RTI among special populations

IYN07: IYCF & Maternal Nutrition Training
Overview
This training course aims to enhance the competencies and build the capacity of UNICEF staff and counterparts who are involved in infant and young child feeding (IYCF) programmes in developing countries. This includes programme development, programme implementation, programme evaluation, and other related activities for improving nutrition and health outcomes of infants, young children, and women.
Training objectives
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Explain why maternal, infant, and young child nutrition practices matter.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of counseling skills
- Describe recommended feeding practices through the first two years of life
- Describe how to breastfeed most effectively.
- Identify ways to prevent and resolve common breastfeeding difficulties.
- Describe various aspects of appropriate complementary feeding during the period from 6 up to 24 months.
- Describe practices for feeding the sick child or recovering from illness.
- Describe basic information in infant feeding in the context of HIV.
- Counsel pregnant women and mothers on appropriate nutrition during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Equip the community health workers/volunteers on knowledge on importance and causes of malnutrition, Screening using MUAC, sensitize on importance of IYCF, management of diarrhea in the house etc
- Describe how Low intake of omega fatty acids can cause problems during pregnancy.

CMA08: Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM)
Overview
Malnutrition in Somalia contributes to high morbidity among pregnant and lactating women and morbidity and mortality among children under five. Many cases of acute malnutrition become severe and complicated due to delays in case detection and presentation at health facilities. The country’s Ministry of Health recognizes that malnutrition is a public health problem which has not been tackled as yet and requires a comprehensive integrated public health approach to address it.
In responding to this, SOS Community Nursing School designed refresher trainings on Community Management of Acute Malnutrition to strengthen the healthcare provider’s capacity to detect and treat malnutrition cases.
Training Objectives
At the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Discuss acute malnutrition and the need for a response
- Identify the principles of CMAM
- Describe recent innovations and evidence
- Discuss how the components of CMAM work together
- Develop an appreciation for the issues related to implementing CMAM
- Explore how CMAM can be implemented in different contexts
- Identify global commitments related to CMAM
Training Delivery
The training methodologies will be participatory in style and include group discussions, demonstrations, and role plays, practical and plenary sessions, lectures, brainstorming etc. The learning styles for in each participant will be taken care of as an adult-friendly learning approach that encompasses major learning styles will be used for effective learning.

ETA09: Emergency Triage Assessment & Treatment (ETAT)
Overview
The Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) course is designed to familiarize health workers with the ETAT guidelines and to provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills for applying the guidelines. It teaches health workers to: Triage all sick children when they arrive at a health facility, into those with emergency signs, with priority signs, or non-urgent cases; Provide emergency treatment for life-threatening conditions.
Training Objectives
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Triage all sick children when they arrive at a health facility, into the following categories: those with emergency signs; those with priority signs and those who are non-urgent cases.
- Assess a child’s airway and breathing and give emergency treatments.
- Assess the child’s status of circulation and level of consciousness.
- Manage shock, coma, and convulsions in a child.
- Assess and manage severe dehydration in a child with diarrhoea.
- Plan and implement ETAT in your own working area in your hospital.
