Overview
Pharo Foundation (“the Foundation”) is a mission-driven, non-profit organization that designs, funds, and operates economic development programmes to achieve its vision of a vibrant, productive, and self-reliant Africa. Over the next decade, our goal is to create maximum impact towards three critical missions:

2. Eliminating barriers to employment and productivity: Our productivity mission is to identify and eliminate health, financial, and structural barriers to employment and productivity for working people.
3. Solving water scarcity: Our water mission is to ensure that people and communities across Africa have access to a safe and affordable source of water.
We are a diverse, multicultural, and passionate organization, with over 450 employees in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Somaliland. Our headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya, and we have a liaison office in London, UK, which is home to our parent organization, Pharo Management.
Somaliland is currently in a phase of epidemiological transition where population growth, urbanization, ageing, and improved standards of living will soon contribute to a growing burden of disease from NCDs. In a recent study, 18.2% of patients visiting hospitals in Hargeisa and Burao suffered from NCDs, with HTN and DM accounting for most cases at 13.7% and 7.5% of total visits, respectively (THET 2022). The World Bank (2020) reported that over 30% of the total deaths in Somaliland are attributed to NCDs, and all of these deaths occur prematurely.
With this background in mind, Pharo Foundation is implementing a pilot program on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) especially diabetes and hypertension in Somaliland. The foundation supported the construction of a centre for NCDs in the country to provide high quality and effective clinical and preventive services to the community. The centre is located within Hargeisa Group Hospital (HGH).
