Somali Children Welfare and Rights Watch is a local humanitarian, non- political, non-profitable, non-religious and non-governmental independent organization, which is dedicated to Promote Somali Children. SCWRW not only advocates all important child rights that have not been obtained by the children during the over decade civil conflicts and the existence of the former regime, but also expresses its role of restoration the normal life of the children in particular the distressed and disadvantage ones in the collaboration stakeholders. Due to our long operational history, we have established positive working relationships with key stakeholders, including national government, local authorities, donors, international and local NGOs, as well as the trust and acceptance of the communities themselves.
Generic Duties:
- Conduct a variety of structured and unstructured activities (recreational, psycho-social and informal skills training) for beneficiaries, catering to the various psycho-social needs and interests of different beneficiary groups (adults, adolescents, children);
- Prepare for structured psycho-social support activities by carefully reading the PSS SOPs and Curriculum Manuals and preparing all required material and equipment in advance;
- Conduct recreational activities with children and adults such as sports activities, arts and crafts, dance music, drama etc;
- Support community resource persons in the implementation of vocational and skill trainings;
- Facilitate the participation of all segments of the target population in the planned activities ensuring the inclusion of the most vulnerable groups;
- Ensure that during all activities proper attention is paid to specific emotional and physical needs;
- Monitor beneficiaries’ progress during psychosocial support activities and identify persons with unusual changes in behavior or other signs of psychosocial distress for referral to a Case Worker or Psychologist;
- Carry out all tasks respecting key protection principles including but not limited to: do no harm, non-discrimination, confidentiality and accountability;
- Conduct focus group discussions and other participatory activities to engage community members in protection activities and to better understand their needs and interests;
- Engage community volunteers in planned activities held at the community center according to a planned activity schedule;
- Maintain daily attendance registers and monthly inventory sheets for each activity conducted;
- Ensure a safe, friendly and non-discriminatory environment is upheld during all activities;
- Participate in meetings and trainings in and outside the centers and/or in SCWRW offices when requested;
- Complete additional tasks assigned by Supervisor.
Skills and qualifications
Person specification:
- Social Work/Public health Degree or previous experience as a social worker for an NGO;
- Minimum 2/3 year work experience with international/national NGOs and/or local authorities in the Somali context;
- Knowledge of community resources and referral pathway
- Strong listening and empathy skills, as well as commitment to supporting women and children survivors/ at risk;
- Ability and motivation to work well with local authorities, local leaders and local community;
- Good cooperation skills, ability to work well independently and in a team;
- Good problem solving and social skills and creative, to think of alternative solutions;
- Stress-resilient to be able to cope with deadlines and complex problems;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills;
- Computer literate (Word and Excel);
- Fluency in English and Somali(Maay Speaking)
- Willing to work extra hours and available at the weekend for emergency cases.
