Job description
SARD is currently implementing a substantial WASH project with the funding from SHF in the Baidoa District of Bay Region in Somalia, and seeks to engage the services of a competent WASH Engineer to be part of the project implementation team.
Job summary
The duties of the WASH Engineer shall include the following:
1. Project design and planning:
- Conduct assessments and feasibility studies for WASH projects.
- Develop detailed designs and plans for water supply, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure.
- Prepare technical drawings, specifications, and bill of quantities for WASH facilities.
2. Implementation and supervision:
- Oversee the construction and rehabilitation of WASH infrastructure, ensuring compliance with design specifications and quality standards.
- Supervise contractors and labourers to ensure timely and efficient project execution.
- Monitor progress and resolve any issues that arise during implementation.
3. Technical support and capacity building:
- Provide technical guidance and support to field staff and local partners on WASH engineering aspects.
- Conduct training sessions for community members and stakeholders on the operation and maintenance of WASH facilities.
- Develop user manuals and operation guidelines for WASH infrastructure.
4. Quality assurance and control:
- Implement quality control measures to ensure the durability and functionality of WASH facilities.
- Conduct regular site visits and inspections to assess the quality of materials and workmanship.
- Address any defects or deficiencies in the construction process.
5. Water resource management:
- Design and implement sustainable water resource management practices.
- Conduct hydrological assessments and water quality testing to ensure safe and reliable water sources.
- Develop and promote water conservation strategies within the community.
6. Coordination and collaboration:
- Coordinate with local authorities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to ensure the alignment and integration of WASH projects.
- Participate in WASH sector meetings and represent the organization in technical working groups.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure a holistic approach to community development.
7. Compliance and safety:
- Ensure all WASH projects comply with local regulations, environmental standards, and safety protocols.
- Promote and enforce health and safety standards on all project sites.
- Address any environmental or safety concerns related to WASH infrastructure.
Skills and qualifications
Applicants applying for this position are required to have the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in WASH engineering or related infrastructure projects.
- Strong technical skills in designing and implementing water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
- Experience in project management, including planning, budgeting, and reporting.
- Knowledge of WASH sector standards, policies, and best practices.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Somali and English.
