Job description

SARD is currently implementing a substantial Nutrition project with the funding from SHF in the Baidoa District of Bay Region in Somalia, and seeks to engage the services of a competent Nutrition Screener to be part of the project team.

Job summary

The duties of the Nutrition Screener shall include the following:

1.    Screening and assessment:

  • Conduct nutritional screenings and assessments of children, pregnant and lactating women, and other vulnerable populations.
  • Measure and record anthropometric data, including weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC).
  • Identify and refer individuals with acute malnutrition and other nutrition-related issues for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Check the conditions of anthropometric materials received or to be sent, and verify the accuracy of any previously recorded data about the items
  • Responsible for proper handling of weighing and measuring equipment. Ensure scales are properly calibrated at all times and report defects, damage or loss of equipment to the nutrition officer

2.    Data collection and documentation:

  • Accurately collect and record screening data using standardized tools and forms.
  • Maintain up-to-date and organized records of all screened individuals.
  • Assist in the preparation of regular reports on screening activities and outcomes.

3.    Community outreach:

  • Conduct community outreach activities to identify and engage at-risk populations.
  • Educate community members about the importance of nutrition and available services.
  • Collaborate with community health workers and volunteers to ensure broad coverage and effective outreach.

4.    Referral and follow-up:

  • Refer individuals identified with malnutrition to appropriate treatment programs and services.
  • Follow up with referred individuals to ensure they receive necessary care and support.
  • Coordinate with healthcare providers and nutritionists to monitor the progress of referred cases.

5.    Training and capacity building:

  • Assist in training community health workers and volunteers on screening techniques and tools.
  • Provide ongoing support and supervision to ensure accurate and effective screening practices.
  • Develop and distribute educational materials to support community-based screening efforts.

6.    Coordination and collaboration:

  • Work closely with nutrition program staff, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to ensure integrated service delivery.
  • Participate in nutrition and health coordination meetings and working groups.
  • Collaborate with local authorities and community organizations to enhance program reach and impact.

7.    Quality assurance:

  • Ensure all screening activities comply with organizational policies, donor requirements, and local regulations.
  • Implement quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of screening data.
  • Address any challenges or issues that arise during screening activities.

8.    Health education and promotion:

  • Conduct health education sessions in the community to raise awareness about malnutrition prevention and treatment.
  • Promote best practices in infant and young child feeding (IYCF) and general nutrition.
  • Advocate for improved nutrition and health practices within the community.

Skills and qualifications

Applicants applying for this position are required to have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Nursing, or a related field.
  • Diploma in nutrition, nursing or public health
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in nutritional screening or a related role.
  • Strong understanding of nutritional assessment tools and techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in data collection and management.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Experience in community health or nutrition programs is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Somali and English.
