About COOPI

COOPI- Cooperazione Internazionale is an Italian humanitarian non-governmental organization founded in 1965. COOPI aims to help the world’s poorest to improve their access to healthcare, food, and financial security, and to overcome their special vulnerability to wars, civil conflicts and natural disasters. For more than 50 years of long-term support and constant presence in the field, COOPI has been engaged in breaking the cycle of poverty and responding to specific emergencies in numerous sectors, including Food Security, Humanitarian Aid, Health, Socio-Economical Services, Water and Sanitation, Human Rights, Education and Training, Migrations and Sustainable Energy.

COOPI in Somalia

COOPI has been active with its humanitarian and resilience programs in Somalia since 1984. COOPI has been implementing emergency and long-term resilience building projects including food security & livelihoods, water and sanitation and health, to improve the living conditions of thousands of vulnerable families.

COOPI has been providing response and supporting the most basic and pressing needs of communities in Southwest State, South Central, Banadir, Jubaland and Somaliland. COOPI has a long-standing presence in those locations providing both emergency humanitarian support and building resilient livelihoods through a multi-sectoral approach with specific focus on crisis affected populations. COOPI's main operational and coordination offices are located in Mogadishu, Baidoa and Dollow. COOPI also has a support and regional office in Nairobi.

                       

Job Summary

 

Under the overall leadership of the FSL Program Manager, the NRM Officer will ensure the quality implementation of the Program which S/He will  be assigned

 

Essential Job Functions

 

Project Implementation and Supervision: Ensure that the NRM activities are implemented in a timely and professional manner COOPI standards and in line with beneficiary needs putting in mind the project objectives and ensuring that all NRM activities are in line with project strategy and design.

 

The NRM Officer will report directly to the FSL Programme Manager.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

The NRM Officer will have the following tasks all in accordance with COOPI rules, procedures and standards:

Technical activities:

  • Community mobilization and sensitization.
  • Support communities to identify, strengthen or develop community based early warning systems.
  • Strengthen the capacity of communities to access and use seasonal weather forecasts through promotion of available information sources and training on usage of the forecasts.
  • Capacity building of local communities on natural resource management and planning.
  • Support the development of community rangeland and water management processes. 
  • Build capacity of communities to rehabilitate and manage strategic water points to ensure water availability during droughts.
  • Assist communities to develop community-based disaster risk reduction plans, action plans and to monitor the implementation of those plans.
  • Facilitate local communities in participatory review and assessment of existing community natural resources and in documentation of traditional and formal strategies to manage these resources.
  • Identify/strengthen and build the capacity of local institutions to manage natural resources.
  • Organize for community forums or trainings on conflict mitigation and management.
  • Support communities in identification and undertaking of environmental protection and rehabilitation projects

Skills and qualifications

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Holder of a Natural Resource Management/Environmental Studies/ Degree/Diploma with three years of experience in rangeland management.
  • Must be a Somali National with clear knowledge of the region of operation.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use standard computing packages (word, excel, outlook, power point, internet etc)
  • Developed planning, organizational and research / analytical skills;
  • Strong team working and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience working in fast paced humanitarian programming in Somalia is an advantage

Be able to communicate effectively in Somali and English Language
