    Program Intern – Berbera, Somaliland

    Background of Shaqodoon Organization

    Shaqodoon is a local NGO founded in 2011 to create innovative and long-lasting solutions to Somalia/land’s youth employment challenges. The organization designs, delivers and evaluates innovative programs to address some of the local community’s most urgent challenges in livelihood skill training, education, civic education, justice and health. Shaqodoon is a national platform whose goal is to prioritize youth employment and education on the development agenda and to exchange knowledge on effective policies and programs to improve employment and education opportunities for youth, prioritizing at risk youth, marginalized groups, and people who have lost hope and are thus often jailed for local crimes.

    Berbera Youth Center (BYC) which is recently established under the Accelerated Socio-economic Empowerment of Youth project which is financed by European Union through UNFPA to be one of the physical spaces that provides essential and strategic approach in promoting, empowering, mobilizing, educating, and fostering youth participation and engagement in Saahil region, where a considerable number of vulnerable youths are found. The center is intended to function as a multiservice offering hub.

    Job purpose

    The Program Intern reports to the Project Officers of Shaqodoon and will manage the day-to-day implementation of activities in the center, to ensure planning, coordination and reporting of the center services.

    Duties and Responsibilities

          Assist in organizing training, workshops, events, conferences, and any other activities/initiatives.

          Support in collecting and compiling M&E data as requested.

          Maintain and update the beneficiary databases.

          Keep and record daily attendance sheet of the trainings, workshops, events, conferences, and any other center activities/initiatives in both hard and soft.

          Making follow up call for the beneficiaries to report their progress.

          Management of trainings, workshops, awareness raising and supervision of the overall activities of Youth Center

          Develop and manage the training program of the center, including identifying training needs, and coordinating training sessions.

          Coordinate and schedule training sessions, ensuring that all trainees are aware of upcoming training opportunities.

          Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and make necessary adjustments to improve outcomes.

          Track and report on training program outcomes and impact on trainees’ success.

          Organize and oversee outreach and in reach events.

          Provide excellent customer service to youth (mainly disadvantaged girls) and address their suggestions/concerns as needed.

          Volunteer to attend and speak at sexual reproductive health meetings, or any other Covenant Youth and Girls related functions.

    Other Duties

          Ensure creativity and innovation of the center.

          Assist in preparation of events and exhibition in the center.

          Prepare and submit quarterly based progress reports with clear results-based indicators.

          With support from the Shaqodoon’s program staff, present the mid-term (every six months) achievements of the center to the relevant stakeholders.

          Ensure effective collaboration with all government institutions in Berbera (most notably; Berbera municipality, office of the governor and other regional representatives)

    Skills and Qualifications

    The Program Intern should have a minimum of degree in social sciences or diploma of related fields of study;

    Relevant internship experience, especially in NGO Environment, and in relation to vulnerable youths and women;

     

    Adaptability and flexibility in working within complex and dynamic environments.

    Ability to deliver high quality products in a timely manner.

    Experience in dealing with the issues of basic life skills, work ethics, discipline management, employability skills and gender mainstreaming;

     

    Practice effective teaching methodologies in life skills, especially interactive and experiential teaching.

     

    Proven experiences and capacities to develop inter-personal skills, life skills and behavioral assertiveness to improve the living conditions of vulnerable youths.
