Health & Nutrition Project

Job Title: Mobile Team Nurse/ Midwife

Number of positions: 2 Nurses, and 2 Midwives

Location: Based in Burao with regular travels to project sites in Togdheer and Sool regions

Reports to: Health and Nutrition Project Coordinator and Nutrition Project Officer

Duration of Position: 11 Months including 3months probation period        

 

Organizational Background:

Candlelight for Environment, Education & Health was founded in 1995 as a non-governmental organization dedicated to development issues in underserved and/or marginalized communities. Candlelight quickly grew from a small institution with limited coverage to one of the biggest charities in Somaliland. From its inception to date Candlelight has been working hard to implement and manage high quality, contextually appropriate and effective programs to serve the most vulnerable communities in Somaliland.

 

Project Background:

Candlelight in partnership with Acted and with funding from the French Embassy will undertake a 12-months project aimed to restore resilience though improved food security and nutrition outcomes for vulnerable displaced and rural population in crisis affected areas in Somalia to a total of 5,120 households (30,720 individuals). This will be achieved through the provision of nutrition and health services in 18 IDP sites and rural villages within Caynaba and Laas Canood Districts in Sool Region and Burco District in Togdheer Region (SO1), in particular for Pregnant and Lactating Women and Children under two years of age that lack regular and vital access to Mother and Child Health Units in the first 1,000 days of life. To achieve this, Candlelight will establish Mobile Health and Nutrition Mobile Teams (MHNT) that have the capacity to target at least 21,000 individuals (80 patients/day) with nutrition screening and treatment, referral pathway for severe cases, vaccination, and awareness on key topics related to good nutrition, child health, and hygiene practices for better community development.

 

Position Summary:

At present, Candlelight is seeking 2 exceptional midwives, and 2 nurses to take up the positions of Mobile Team Nurse and Midwife. The Mobile Health Team (Nurse/ Midwife) will be expected to provide basic nursing care, first aid, treat minor wounds, immunize patients, and administer essential medicine prescribed by medical doctors. The post holders will work with other staff on the MHNT.

Duties & Responsibilities:

§  Carry out all nursing/ midwifery tasks related to the mobile health team services.

§  Take care of nursing cares, minor treatment for those attending mobile health and nutrition teams in the targeted communities.

§  Provide health education on nutrition, EPI and about the prevention of other diseases as per the MoHD guidelines.

§  Give the necessary supervision care and advice to women during pregnancy labor and the post-partum period.

§  Give advice and educate women and communities in relevant areas of health including preparation for parenthood and childbirth.

§  Identify and report immediately any problem impeding the delivery of services or the achievement of the program’s objectives to the line management.

§  Organize referrals of patients in critical conditions when possible.

§  Collect and compile MHNT midwifery/ nusing services related data.

§  Process on time requisition of medicines supplies and equipment’s and ensure their rational use.

§  Comply with Candlelight policies and practice with respect to child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.

§  Respect the target community’s cultures, and traditions

§  To take up other tasks within the field of competence and as requested by the line manager.

Skills and qualifications

Qualifications Requirements:

§  BSc/College Diploma in a relevant field (nursing, midwifery, and health).

§  Experience in health care services e.g., health/ nutrition mobile teams.

§  Ability to communicate effectively in Somali verbally and in writing.

§  Be able to work under pressure with tight deadlines.

§  Good computer knowledge of MS Office Packages is preferable.

§  Must be capable of working both individually and as part of a team to undertake tasks in a fast-paced environment.

§  Willingness to work, travel to and live in potential conflict areas.
