Position (Temporary) – Possibility of a Permanent Role

Key Function: 

The primary function for this position is to the provision of psychosocial services to patients who suffer from khat, alcohol dependence or other drug abuse related to behavioural issues/problems. The position holder will manage the psychosocial aspect of MAT clients and create a treatment plan. The addiction counsellor will assist patients with the development of personal recovery programs that focus on healthier behaviours and examine the issues related to the addictions. Many of the patients in the East of Africa are primarily Somali speaking people and would like to be able to acquire psychosocial treatment via the phone/WhatsApp, the position holder must then be available throughout the day and night.

 Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Meeting with clients to evaluate their health and substance issues.
• Identifying issues arising and also be able to create goals and treatment plans in order to re-evaluate the treatment plans periodically.
• Provide the clinic with clients’ progress on their treatment plans.
• Liaise with any additional treatment programs in line with the identified issues from the treatment plan and evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment programs.
• Teaching clients coping mechanisms.
• Referring clients to existing support groups in the community.
• Meeting with family members and provide guidance and support.

• Bachelor’s Degree in psychology or any other related courses.
• Specialized training in addiction treatment
• Counselling skills
• Evaluate patients' health, recommend treatments and help them develop skills to aid in recovery.
• Comprehensive knowledge of client centred mental health and addictions interventions, practice methods and professional skills.
