Nutrition, Hygiene and Sanitation Officer

1. Organization and Position Overview

Welthungerhilfe is a German-based international non-profit humanitarian and development organization. The ultimate vision of Welthungerhilfe is to see a world without hunger and poverty. WHH has been working in four regions of Somaliland (Awdal, Maroodi-jex, Toghdeer and Sanaag) since 2001 with multisector interventions. It secures funding mainly from German Government external cooperation (BMZ, AA) and private donors of Germany for its interventions in Somaliland.

WHH seek to engage an experienced individual to fill the position of hygiene & sanitation/ public health officer. In brief, the successful candidate will be responsible for hygiene promotional activities and public health in general.

Duties and Areas of Responsibility

• The NHS officer will support the NHS expert in conducting hygiene promotion trainings in target areas
• H/She will provide relevant training support for Menstrual Hygiene Management in target institutions and villages.
• The successful candidate will advise the project on culturally acceptable and financially viable approaches for menstrual hygiene management in Somaliland context.
• Under the guidance of the NHS expert, the NHS officer will regularly monitor public health situation within project areas and recommend improvement measures.
• In collaboration with government line ministry, h/she will work with NHS team during selection, training, deployment, and monitoring of community-based hygiene promoters in respective target areas.
• The NHS officer will support the procurement process and distribution of hygiene related NFI and offer trainings to target population on how the items can promote good hygiene practices.
• Successful candidate will support establishment and training for WMCs, h/she will facilitate their legal registration process with respective government agencies.
• With support from project engineers, h/she will support the advocacy for reasonable tariff/water fees setting and collection.
• In close collaboration with engineering team, h/she will support the process of water source inventory data collection. Perform any task assigned by the supervisor.
• Perform any other task assigned by the supervisor.

• Degree in Public Health, Nutrition, or related field
• More than 2 – 4 years’ experience in Nutrition, Hygiene and Sanitation activities in Somaliland.
• Strong technical report writing skills
• Computer skills
• Fluency in English and Somali language required
• Strong interpersonal skills and a team player
• Able and willing to stay extended periods under simple rural conditions.

1. Language Requirement

Proficiency in both oral and written communication in English and Somali is a requirement.
