JOB TITLE: FSL/Micro Finance Assistant position (Somali National Only)

LINE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Matrix Reporting to: Child Welfare Manager
Islamic Relief Worldwide, Somalia Programme has been operating in Somalia since 2006 and has responded to conflict and drought affected people through provision of life saving assistance. Through our projects, IR has continuously been providing safe drinking water, improving hygienic sanitation facilities, increasing hygiene awareness, particularly to ones living in IDP camps; empowering the urban poor and distressed working children, engaging in conflict management and mitigation and strengthening of community cohesiveness and co-existence. The FSL/Micro Finance Assistant, Microfinance will be responsible for:
- Supporting the Microfinance unit on several initiatives as they arise related to improved financial management and financial indicator reporting for soft loan provision section under CW Program.
- Maintaining Microfinance Unit information systems, including refinement, input, and development of Access databases and Excel spreadsheets for performance indicator monitoring and special Microfinance awards reporting.
- Researching, editing, drafting unit materials, as needed.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Take the lead on one or more new Microfinance initiatives, including: case studies of Microfinance localization issues (IRS MIF toolkit, policy and procedure issues related small scale business financing policies); implementation of Micro banking Bulletin database toolkit and organize and prepare materials for joint Micro finance-finance workshop.
- Provide ongoing support to Microfinance in their collaboration with finance to improve and better define the accounting policies and procedures for Microfinance CBOs.
- Work with BDO Program officer to develop a tracking system for Microfinance funding progress trucking.
- Contribute to finalization and testing of the spreadsheet for collecting Microfinance/VSLA program performance indicators (PPI).
- Provide source researching, editing, proofreading, and other assistance with materials development projects, as needed. And facilitate trainings to capacitate the VSLA groups
- Assist with initial research and writing on collaborative projects with Learning Centers and other regional materials development projects.
- Facilitate and ensure the effectiveness of all the support groups, VSLA and community representatives
- Carry out assessment of the families and individuals and mark out families reached self-reliance.
- Regularly monitor/follow up the small-scale business developed by the beneficiaries
- Conduct home visits to families and assess their economic status
- Visiting beneficiaries’ business activities and encouraging to improve their small-scale business activities
- Participating VSLA meetings, encourage to saving and provide loans to the VSLA
- Introduce group led saying
- Provide families for coaching and mentors whenever you done the home visits
- Maintain an up-to-date record and excellent filing system
- Prepare satisfactory reports, case studies and examples of best practices and ensure that up-to-date records for all report
- Attend regular department meetings
- Facilitate ongoing participatory monitoring and evaluation throughout the project implementation process ensuring full participation of the management committees and beneficiaries.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with local authorities, line ministries, community leaders, project participants and other parties in the project areas
- In partnership with other CBO’s, organize and conducts trainings,
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
- Update and manage the information in Base line assessment database and produce quarterly progress reports and specific reports as needed. Prepare, standardize and organize process for VSLA membership certificates and letters and quarterly bulletin.
- Design and add ongoing updates to VSLA bylaws as needed.
- Assist Program officer in analyzing quarterly indicator reports (PPI).
- Assisting Business Development Officer with various assessment review and analysis tasks, as needed.
- Organize and develop a system (database) for categorizing Microfinance client stories and photographs for use in various publications and for tracking that use.
SKILLS AND BEHAVIOURS
- Skills related to participatory methods.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and creatively.
- Good computer skills.
Skills and qualifications
- Must have Bachelor’s degree in Development studies, Social Worker, Business Administration, Economic, accounting, Pure science, Vet/Agriculture etc.
- Demonstrated interest in international development and specifically Microfinance required.
- Excellent writing and interpersonal skills.
- Solid quantitative ability preferably with background in economics, accounting or finance. 5. Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel and Access), internet and web.
- Proficiency in English.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Minimum 3 years’ experience from working in relief and development contexts.
- Good knowledge of English language
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively to the field.
