Consultant to Develop In-Service CPD Training Manuals for Midwives
Project: Somali Midwives for Improving Lives and Enhancing Sexual and Reproductive Health (SMILES)
Position: CPD Training Manual Development Consultant
Organization: Somaliland Nursing and Midwifery Association (SLNMA)
Duty Station: Somaliland / Hargeisa
1. Background
The Somali Midwives for Improving Lives and Enhancing Sexual and Reproductive Health (SMILES) project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, aims to strengthen the quality of midwifery education and sexual and reproductive health services in Somalia and Somaliland.
Under Activity 1122.1, SLNMA seeks a qualified consultant to develop a practical, competency-based In-Service Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Training Package for Midwives.
The consultant will work closely with the CPD In-Service Training Committee and relevant technical stakeholders to develop, review and finalize the training materials.
2. Purpose of the Consultancy
The purpose of the consultancy is to develop evidence-based, competency-focused and context-appropriate CPD training materials that strengthen midwives' knowledge, practical skills, confidence and clinical decision-making.
The training should emphasize skills practice, simulation, case-based learning, role play, teamwork and competency assessment, rather than lecture-based learning.
3. Proposed Training Modules
1. Maternal Sepsis, Post-Abortion Care & Infection Prevention and Control
2. Essential Newborn Care & Resuscitation
3. Antenatal Care, Counselling & Early Identification of Complications
4. Respectful, Rights-Based Care & Family Planning/Birth Spacing
5. GBV & Women's Mental Health
6. Intrapartum Care & Obstetric Emergencies
Final topics will be confirmed by the CPD In-Service Training Committee.
4. Scope of Work
· Review relevant national guidelines, standards and existing training materials.
· Develop clear competencies and learning objectives for each module.
· Develop practical facilitator training manuals.
· Integrate adult-learning and participatory methodologies.
· Develop skills practice, simulation, case studies and role-play activities.
· Develop pre- and post-tests and competency assessment tools.
· Develop OSCEs and skills checklists where appropriate.
· Develop PowerPoint presentations, participant handouts and job aids.
· Integrate gender-responsive and climate-responsive considerations where relevant.
· Incorporate feedback from the CPD Committee and technical stakeholders.
· Finalize all materials in editable formats.
Skills and qualifications
Required Qualifications and Experience
· Advanced qualification in Midwifery, Nursing, Public Health, Medical Education or a related field.
· Demonstrated experience developing CPD/in-service training manuals for health professionals.
· Strong experience in midwifery, maternal and newborn health and/or SRHR.
· Experience developing competency-based and skills-focused training materials.
· Experience with simulation, OSCEs and competency assessment is highly desirable.
· Strong knowledge of adult-learning methodologies.
· Experience working in low-resource or similar settings.
· Excellent English writing and communication skills.
· Familiarity with the Somaliland/Somalia health context is an advantage.
