The key themes for the philanthropic side of the Foundation are education, health, water and agriculture. At the end of 2019, the Foundation started its Pharo Ventures franchise to prioritise sectors where the Foundation believes a real impact can be made by establishing self-sustaining businesses that focus on job creation.

Pharo Kindergarten provides a wonderfully vibrant learning environment that is hands-on, engaging, and fun. It puts equal emphasis on all child development aspects including cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development. To ensure that holistic development is reached, the kindergarten offers the following learning activities; Languages, Mathematics, Religion, Physical Education, Creative Studies, Science and Social Studies.

Headquartered in London, the Foundation has an operational Head Office in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assosa), Somaliland (Hargeisa) and Rwanda (Kigali) with further expansion plans in East Africa.

Position: Arabic Teacher

Location: Hargeisa, Somaliland

Reporting to: KG Head Teacher 

Contract Type: Fixed Term - One year

Position Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Arabic Kindergarten Teacher whose greatest passion is to see kids learn and grow. Our teachers have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the children, creating joy in each child's life by teaching through play and hands-on activities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Leads all Activities within the Assigned Class

• Prepares lesson plans and outlines in accordance with the curriculum guidelines or requirements of the school and government.
• Teaches lessons and facilitates or supervises a variety of non-academic activities which may include art, crafts, storytelling, sports, nature walks etc. Ensures all necessary preparations are made prior to each lesson.
• Arranges cultural activities to educate children in local culture and custom.
• Involves children in the operations and maintenance of the school, including cleaning classrooms, tending flowerbeds etc.

1. Create a stimulating learning environment

• Maintains a positive degree of discipline inside and outside the classroom in order to create a safe, secure and appropriate environment for learning.
• Promotes a warm, supportive, non-threatening ethos in which the child finds learning enjoyable and stimulating, and in which respect and cooperation are emphasised.
• Cultivate and promote love for Islam and Islamic values within students.
• Uses creative teaching methods to nurture the children’s interest in learning, e.g. uses drama, story-telling, reading out loud, singing or art to enhance the learning experience.
• Creates a lively, stimulating atmosphere in the classroom, e.g. by decorating the walls with children’s arts and crafts or by establishing a ‘nature corner’.
• Maintains the classroom in a neat and tidy condition in order to create an environment conducive to learning.

1. Ensures the Educational Development of each Child

• Provides individual attention to each child, monitoring their educational progress and taking appropriate corrective action as necessary.
• Conducts academic support programmes such as holiday classes, remedial classes and individual tutoring to meet the educational needs of each child.
• Identifies clear teaching and learning objectives specifying how they will be taught and assessed.
• Takes responsibility for the progress of students in Arabic, across the school.
• Develops and implements homework programmes which may include project work, extra reading or other assignments.
• Prepares online lessons (if required).
• Prepares progress reports for each child as required by the Head Teacher, detailing the child’s academic progress as well as overall development.

1. Acts as a Participating Member of Pharo foundation

• Actively participates in all school meetings and school or school activities such as sports days, cultural activities and plays.
• Maintains close contact with parents discussing the child’s academic progress and general development.
• Be cognizant of the school’s policies, aims, objectives and organisational procedures in such a way as to contribute positively, sensitively and harmoniously to the student’s achievements.
• Participates in all Parent-Teacher meetings

1. General

• Supervises extra-mural activities such as organised sports, clubs, etc.
• Performs administrative or other extra duties as required by the Head Teacher, such as storekeeping, producing the school magazine or organising school events.
• Maintains all furniture and equipment within the classroom in good order.
• Keeps attendance registers, grade records and any other records required by the school.

Qualification Requirements:

• The ideal person should possess, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in education or Islamic Studies or Equivalent.
• A minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience in kindergarten school level education, especially in kindergarten.
• Excellent command of the Arabic and Somali languages.
• Proficient in teaching methodology.
• Play-oriented learning experience.
• Ability to plan and deliver engaging lessons.

This position is open to both female and male nationals from Somaliland.
