    Senior Media & Communication Officer

    Fulltime / 40 hours a week

    Contract length: 1 Year with the possibility of extension

    Location: Hargeisa, with frequent travel to the other area of operations

    JOB PURPOSE:

    The Media and Communications Officer will work closely with Oxfam Somalia teams and the regional communications teams to promote stories to key audiences via their preferred regional, national and specialist media. As a professional and persuasive writer, the primary goal is to achieve media coverage by crafting stories, arranging interviews, and building relationships with journalists. The incumbent will need to have an excellent understanding of offline and online media and be ready to take advantage of opportunities.

    The incumbent will be responsible for enhancing Oxfam’s Somalia/Somaliland project’s visibility with its donor, beneficiaries, partners, and the public by documenting and profiling success stories required for donor reporting. This will require the incumbent to work closely with all field teams and partners (15 to 18) implementing projects on behalf of Oxfam.

    . The successful candidate should demonstrate prior experience in multimedia i.e., video filming and editing, graphic design and photography.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Technical, Leadership, People and Resource management)

    • Generate and contributes to the design and content of print publications, social media channels, original content, and other outlets that help Oxfam’s Somalia/Somaliland engage with relevant communities and supporters.
    • Develop and implement strategic communication plans to enhance the visibility of Oxfam's field projects.
    • Lead on the translation of material from English to Somali and vice versa.
    • Support in developing and maintaining media relations at field/ state level.
    • Support partners in developing communication materials and visibility plans.
    • Draft and otherwise support the production of high-quality media and communications products such as situation reports, photos, fact sheets social media content, video and audio and blogs, for internal and external use.
    • Coordinate with project teams and partners to gather relevant information and success stories for communication purposes.
    • Regularly share compelling content to be used in media, communications, and campaigning.
    • Coordinate the raising of national media’s understanding on the Oxfam’s issues and its partner’s work.
    • Secure national, regional, and international media coverage that supports Oxfam’s humanitarian, development, and fundraising objectives in Somaliland.
    • Lead and coordinate (affiliate) content-gathering and media trips.
    • Coordinate blogs, case studies, and human-interest stories to be used for media pitches, social media (regional blog), and other communications needs.
    • Working on Oxfam Somalia media channels, writing content for the web and social media.
    • Providing media and communications support to all members of the Oxfam in Somalia/Somaliland team.
    • Monitor and evaluate the visibility activities to ensure their effectiveness.
    • Develop and deliver a clear and effective system for internal communications.
    • Ensure communications products are signed-off according to the Oxfam sign-off procedures.
    • Carry out other relevant tasks as directed by the advocacy and Policy Manager.

    Skills and Qualifications

    • BA degree in Journalism, media and communications or related field
    • At least 2 years’ experience on the same with international NGO/UN
    • Experience with professional DSLR cameras, lenses, and lighting, including.
    • Experience and Ability to use different video and photo editing software
    • Experience of collecting and producing communication products, such as case studies and photo stories.
    • Prior 3 years’ experience working in communications on humanitarian or development issues; with experience in successfully supporting the development and implementation of communication and campaign strategies.

    Fluent in written and spoken English and Somali.
