Title: Family Medicine Doctor

Number of Position(s): One (1) Position

Location: Hargeisa, Somaliland

Start Date: ASAP

Duration of Initial Contract: One Year with Possible Extension

Reporting to: Clinical Coordinator

Closely Working with: Head of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Nurse Practitioner

Position Overview

Under the overall guidance of clinic management, the Family Medicine Doctor, with a focus on Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN), will provide comprehensive healthcare to patients across all age groups, including children, women, and families, in a family medicine clinic setting. This doctor will rotate between the Pediatrics and OB/GYN departments while working under the guidance of experienced specialists in each field.

The Family Medicine Doctor will be responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing common and complex medical conditions, as well as providing preventive care and health education. Therefore, Tusmo Hospital seeks a specialized doctor who is well-versed in hospital environments and possesses expertise in the key areas mentioned above.

Duties and Responsibilities

Pediatrics:

  • Provide preventive health services for pediatric patients, including well-child exams, immunizations, and health screenings.
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage pediatric illnesses such as respiratory infections, gastrointestinal issues, and childhood diseases.
  • Manage chronic pediatric conditions, including asthma, diabetes, and developmental disorders, offering support and education to parents and caregivers.
  • Monitor developmental milestones and provide early intervention and referrals when necessary.
  • Educate parents on childhood nutrition, vaccination schedules, and other aspects of health promotion and disease prevention.

Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN):

  • Provide prenatal care to expectant mothers, including routine check-ups, ultrasounds, blood tests, and screening for complications such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.
  • Assist in managing labor and delivery under the supervision of experienced OB/GYN specialists, ensuring the well-being of both mother and child.
  • Provide postpartum care, including breastfeeding support, monitoring for complications like postpartum depression, and addressing family planning needs.
  • Offer routine gynecological services, such as Pap smears, contraceptive counseling, and treatment for common gynecological conditions (e.g., menstrual disorders, urinary tract infections).
  • Educate patients on family planning, sexual health, and lifestyle factors affecting women's health.

General Family Medicine Responsibilities:

  • Provide ongoing care to patients across all age groups, diagnosing and treating a wide range of illnesses and conditions.
  • Offer preventive services, including routine screenings, immunizations, and health education, aimed at improving long-term health outcomes.
  • Respond to urgent medical situations in the clinic and refer patients to specialists or emergency services when necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with other healthcare providers, including pediatricians, OB/GYN specialists, nurses, and administrative staff, to deliver holistic patient care.
  • Educate patients and families about health maintenance, disease prevention, and wellness strategies tailored to their unique needs.

Rotational and Supportive Duties:

  • Rotate between the Pediatrics and OB/GYN departments, supporting specialists while ensuring continuity of care for patients in both areas.
  • Assist senior specialists in managing complex cases, participating in consultations, and developing clinical competence.
  • Follow established clinical guidelines, protocols, and procedures under the supervision of senior specialists in Pediatrics and OB/GYN.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities in both Pediatrics and OB/GYN to expand clinical knowledge and skills.

Skills and qualifications

Academic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in General Medicine with a postgraduate degree in Family Medicine
  • License certification from the Somaliland National Health Professions Committee (NHPC)

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in both Pediatrics and OB/GYN within a hospital, clinic, or family medicine setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology, and General Family Medicine practices.
  • Ability to perform effectively under high-pressure conditions, long working hours, and challenging environments.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage and educate patients and their families.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Willingness to learn and work under the guidance of experienced specialists in both Pediatrics and OB/GYN.
  • Familiarity with hospital work environments, teamwork dynamics, and collaboration with co-workers.
  • Conflict resolution and stress management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
