Job description

Organizational Setting

FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in Azerbaijan in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan is currently implementing “Improvement of Seed and Agro-Chemical Laboratory and Certification Services under the Agrarian Services Agency” project under FAO-Azerbaijan Partnership Programme (FAPP, 2016-2021).

Technical Focus

The project aims to support and improve the activities of the laboratories mentioned in the project and operating under ASA through development of effective management and oversight system, technical capacity building, provision of necessary equipment, adoption of new and state of the art methodologies/methods, international certification and ensuring the delivery of these services to farmers via online platform.

Tasks and responsibilities

The International Consultant on Digital Soil Mapping will provide the following support to the project:

  • Supervise data collection, systematization and harmonisation of soil maps, datasets and databases;
  • Validate the existing soil maps (hard copies);
  • Contribute to the of the AzSIS spatial data infrastructure design and preparation;
  • Select input data, predictors and for national digital soil maps;
  • Liaise with relevant project staff  for the selection of  the software, tools, scripts and data for production of digital soil maps;
  • Support the training sessions on soil survey and data collection;
  • Deliver training sessions on digital soil mapping, data preparation, data management  and harmonisation;
  • Perform quality assessment and quality check of collected soil data, information and analyses;
  • Perform evaluation, validation, preparation and harmonisation of national soil profile database;
  • Train the national staff on digital soil mapping techniques and producing the soil property maps and to guide the development of the soil suitability case studies;
  • Guide the preparation of high resolution (100-250m) digital soil maps of soil properties and threats and uncertainty assessments;
  • Provide consultations and guidance in producing of digital soil property and uncertainty maps using the recent Digital Soil Mapping techniques and tools;
  • Guide the preparation of soil suitability maps for selected crops;
  • Validate the output of digital soil property and threat maps processing on test sites;
  • Control work in preparation of the soil risk and soil suitability maps;
  • Develop symbology for national soil maps and national soil grids of soil properties;
  • Support the validation of national digital soil maps;
  • Participate in preparation of soil suitability maps for selected crops;
  • Assist in preparation of meta data for all produced GIS layers compatible with GloSIS and international data standards

Skills and qualifications

  • University degree in agricultural sciences, soil science or related field and focus on spatial data analyses, data science, geostatistics and digital soil mapping;
  • At least 10 years of experience in digital soil mapping, environmental modelling, spatial data analyses;
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and limited knowledge (level B) of one of the other FAO languages (French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, or Russian). For PSA, working knowledge of English is required.
