The Interpreter facilitates the communication process between and among individuals that do not speak the same language and may represent different cultural backgrounds and in effect enables smooth workflow at the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Jijiga, Ethiopia. 

Background

Under the overall supervision of the Migration Health Nurse (Chief Nurse) and the direct supervision of the Senior Nurse, the successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out the following duties and responsibilities in relation to the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Jijiga, Ethiopia:

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Provide proper, accurate, clear and faithful interpretation from English into one of the required languages (Somali/ Dinka/ Nuer/ Amharic/ Tigrinya/ Oromo/ Afar, etc.), and vice versa during information sessions, pre/posttest counseling, obtaining medical history, laboratory tests and procedures, specialist consultations and physical examination as conducted by IOM medical staff, with the following considerations:

    1. interpreter must translate to and from: the Physician/Nurse/Medical Assistant/Registration clerk to the applicant and applicant to the Physician/Nurse/Medical Assistant/Registration clerk, capturing the accurate meaning of information provided and needed to be passed on

    2. interpreter must be capable of clearly expressing the statements and messages of medical nature, including but not limited to: sexual intercourse, behavior and parts; sexually transmitted diseases; use / abuse of substances, mental disorders, cardiovascular diseases signs and symptoms, neurological diseases signs and symptoms, etc. 

    3. interpreter must hold with utmost respect and confidentiality, any information shared during physical examination. Failure to do so represents major breach of the code of conduct and standards IOM adheres to

  2. Intervene to prevent misunderstandings and perform the task of coordinating or managing turn-taking in order to make the communication process flow smoothly and minimise disruptions

  3. Assist in directing patient flow or minor messenger’s tasks, if and when requested by the direct supervisor, Doctors, the Data Processing assistants, medical admin, Chief Nurse, Nurses, Laboratory Technicians or Receptionists in the IOM clinics

  4. Consult the Medical Terminology database and interact with colleagues

  5. Perform any other related duties as assigned by the supervisors

 

Skills and qualifications

Educational Requirement

  • At least a high school diploma
  • Certificate in interpretation is an advantage

 Required Experience

  • Previous interpretation related work is an advantage
  • At least one-year relevant work experience NGO experience is a plus

 Languages

Fluency in English, Amharic and Tigrinya/Oromifa/Somali/Afar/Arabic
