Job description

Good Neighbors Ethiopia (GNE) is one of the field branches of Good Neighbors International. GNE was founded in 1997 in the spirit to provide self-reliance for neighbors suffering from poverty and discrimination through sustainable development beyond aid. GNE strives to improve lives of the needy segment of society in Ethiopia, especially children’s lives, through education, health, water and sanitation, partnership, and income generation activities since its establishment in 1997. The project is funded by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan implemented by Good Neighbors Japan through its implementing partner Good Neighbors Ethiopia. The project titled as Shelter and livelihood support for refugees and host communities in Aw-bare and Sheder camps, Somali region, Ethiopia.

Overview of the Position

The overall objective of the project is to improve shelter and livelihood of refugees and host communities in Aw-bare and Sheder camps, Somali region, Ethiopia. The Livelihood and Business Development officer will be in charge of the livelihood and business development activities of the project such as livestock provision (goat rearing and poultry) and entrepreneurship support.

Duties and Responsibilities;

  • He/she plans, organizes, coordinates and monitors the activities in the program office and coordinates this with the other related officers in the camps and hosting communities;
  • Facilitates and closely works on provision of all necessary inputs for the agriculture, value chain and livelihood activities;
  • Conducts assessment of agriculture and livelihood, and market development related programs;
  • Working with camp level UN, gov’t and other officials to ensure smooth implementation of projects and selection process of the beneficiaries.
  • Facilitate livelihood related training activities with agriculture and other bureau experts/ training providers as needed.
  • Provide quality & timely reports, life stories and lesson learnt with proper documentation.
  • Prepares activity plans and budgets;
  • Actively assist entrepreneurs and sector-specific groups in the development and implementation of their enterprise.
  • Assist entrepreneurs in the development of marketing plans and business plans if required.
  • Develop new project ideas/proposals on market, agriculture and value chain development.
  • Carry out an assessment of local businesses and design and provide tailor-made technical assistance to businesses.
  • Monitor the small group coaching and networking sessions/activities
  • Ongoing site visits to provide real-time advising to solve business changes and grow businesses
  • Ensure the respect of GNE Code of Conduct and GNE’s zero tolerance policy of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), humanitarian principles and contribute to the integration of Protection and Age, Gender, Diversity (AGD) mainstreaming into GNE programming.
  • Carryout any other duties as outlined by the line manager.

Skills and qualifications

  • BSc/BA/MA/MSC degree in economics, agricultural economics, agricultural business development.
  • Minimum 4 years’ for BA/BSC and 2 years for MA/MSC professional experience working in agricultural, business, and livelihood with refugees and host communities.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Commitment to the vision and mission of GNE.
  • Experience of working with IDPs, Returnees, Refugees and host communities;
  • Experience of working for livestock, business development and any other related activities.
  • Experience in participating to working groups or clusters desirable;
  • Experience working with International NGOs, in refugee settings in complex emergencies.
  • Excellent communication and representation skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish effective and working relations with all the types of stakeholders
  • Adaptability and ability to re-prioritize according to the changing context;
  • Able to work effectively and creatively within a team
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information.
  • Fluent in English, Amharic and Somali languages.
