The Department of World Service (WS) of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is the humanitarian and development arm of the Lutheran World Federation. WS provides support to refugees, returnees, internally displaced people, their host communities and communities at risk, focusing on livelihoods, quality services, protection and social cohesion. The Kenya-Somalia Program has been implementing such interventions in Kenya and Somalia since 1992.
Job Description
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Overall purpose of the role:
The Assistant Youth Officer- Handball & Volleyball will ensure the effective implementation and coordination of the youth Handball & Volleyball activities while offering coaching and mentorship to promote young people’s talent both locally and regionally. This will be implemented in Kakuma, Kalobeyei and Host community areas with a focus on talent identification exposure for protection, potential scouting and monetization. The officer will ensure day to day coordination and facilitation of youth Handball & Volleyball activities and will contribute to the achievement of project results in addition to maintaining local partnerships. He/ she will ensure that the Kalobeyei sports complex Handball & Volleyball court are in good condition at all time
Responsibilities:
· Conducting research and analyzing previous games to develop game plans, tactics, techniques, formations, and strategies.
· Organizing and scheduling Handball & Volleyball tryouts and shortlisting potential players.
· Support in determining individual player abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, and factoring these into the gameplay and strategy sessions. This will be done in all refugee camps and host community with players aided to use the facilities at the sports complex.
· Ensuring that the football and basketball fields at the sports complex and in the communities are available for practice sessions and that players show up on planned time to exercise their Handball & Volleyball talent.
· With support from relevant federations, establishing rules and regulations and ensure that players are familiar with them and practice them in their course.
· Organizing team building sessions and activities off the field.
· Fostering good sportsmanship in all team players, resolving disputes, and addressing bad behavior in a timely manner while ensuring that safeguarding in sports is mainstreamed to all stakeholders.
· Identifying exceptional players who might be scouted for scholarships and to play in professional leagues and link them up to opportunities as availed.
· Ensuring all Handball & Volleyball sports equipment are available within the sports complex and that are in good working order.
· Encouraging youths to engage in other recreational sports and to live a healthy life with a balanced diet.
Other duties
· Provide operational supervision to incentive staff in the implementation of project activities by leading in monthly planning with staff and ensuring resources are appropriately utilized.
· Perform other tasks that may be assigned by the Youth protection and Development officer
Skills and qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
· Bachelor’s Degree in Sports management, youth development, Project Planning and Management, Community Development, Social Work or related fields
· Proven experience of minimum 3 years working within a humanitarian and development programme.
· Experience working in an international NGO will be an added advantage.
· Proven experience in mainstreaming safeguarding standards in youth related activity especially sports
· An impeccable professional standard of ethics as well as the willingness and ability to implement accountability activities within the LWF World Service essential.
· Proven knowledge of running sports related activities especially in humanitarian field
· Knowledge of international and local sports federations and how they work with local/community groups
· Certification in Program Management or other relevant certifications an added advantage.
COMPETENCIES
· Excellent computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, use of internet and email
· Proven experience in Project Management within the humanitarian sector.
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including influencing negotiation and pragmatism.
· Excellent analytical, facilitation and documentation experience with humanitarian programmes.
· Ability to liaise with a variety of people successfully and effectively in a multicultural set up.
· Ability to work independently.
· Fluent in written and spoken English.
