    Location: Kismayo, Somalia

    Duration: 9 months, renewable based on performance, funds, and need for the position

    Role Overview: 

    The Medical doctor will work in collaboration with other health personnel to provide quality patient care in outpatient and inpatient settings.

     

    Primary Responsibilities: 

     

    • ·       Conducts outpatient clinics.
    • ·       Participates in outreach clinics.
    • ·       Carries out minor and major surgery Participate in the preparation of monthly medical activity reports for inclusion in the monthly situation report.
    • ·       Participates in co-ordination and representation activities at field level.
    • ·       Participates in training programs in order to improve his or her skills.
    • ·       Participates in the assessment of the medical needs of the community.
    • ·       Participates in the recruitment and supervision of locally recruited health personnel.
    • ·       Participates in the training of all medical staff and local partner staff to ensure the maximum use of their skills and their full and effective participation in medical activities
    • ·       Together with other project personnel responsible for encouraging community participation in health activities to ensure the long term ownership and effectiveness of the programme.
    • ·       Conducts any other activity requested by his or her immediate supervisor
    • ·       Supervises health personnel under his/her management.
    • ·       Together with nurse in charge of ward responsible for submitting requests for medicines and medical supplies to hospital medical store.
    • ·       Together with nurse in charge of hospital ward responsible for ensuring appropriate patient care.
    • ·       Actively participates in department or ward staff meetings.
    • ·       Assists surgeon to carry out major surgery.

    Skills and Qualifications

    Qualifications: 

     

    • ·       Qualified Medical Doctor (degree in Medicine and Surgery) with clinical experience in hospital environment.
    • ·       Excellent management and personnel skills to enable the motivation, encouragement and participation of national health team members
    • ·       Ability and flexibility to understand the cultural and political environment and to work well with local health personnel
    • ·       Ability to work with a team while developing and implementing programs.
    • ·       Ability to assess evolving health needs quickly and calmly under pressure as required.
    • ·       Excellent communication skills, with good spoken and written English and experience in report writing.
    • ·       Good computer skills to allow reporting and representation.

      

    Key Behaviors & Abilities: 

    • ·          Previous experience within a humanitarian aid organization.
    • ·          Previous experience within the region
    • ·          Excellent computer skills to allow reporting and representation.
    • ·          Ability to remain calm and to be diplomatic, both with the local health authorities and with the community.
    • ·          Good organizational skills.
