Job description

Organizational Background
SOFHA is a national non-governmental, non-profit, and non-political organization established to
improve the health and well-being of communities in Somaliland. Since 2009, SOFHA has been
actively engaged in promoting SRHR through the provision of clinical services, community
health education, nutrition programs, capacity building of healthcare workers, and advocacy
initiatives.
SOFHA is implementing a Health Systems Strengthening Project in partnership with the
Ministry of Health Development (MOHD) with funding from Takeda through Plan
International. The project aims to strengthen access to quality health services through
outreach and mobile clinic activities in underserved communities.
Overall Job Purpose
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for performing laboratory diagnostic procedures
that support clinical services provided through mobile outreach clinics. The position ensures
accurate laboratory testing, proper sample management, and quality control in compliance
with national laboratory standards and SOFHA health policies.
The Laboratory Technician will work closely with mobile clinic staff including doctors, nurses,
midwives, and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely diagnosis and appropriate
patient management. The position requires experience working in remote outreach settings,
strong teamwork, and the ability to resolve operational or interpersonal challenges through
effective conflict resolution and communication skills.

Duties and responsibilities
 Work closely with mobile clinic team members including doctors, nurses, midwives,
and other health staff to support quality patient care.
 Collaborate with field project teams, community health workers, local partners, local
councils, and community leaders to ensure effective outreach service delivery.
 Receive, label, and safely store laboratory samples in accordance with laboratory
safety and quality standards.
 Organize and maintain samples to ensure their integrity and accuracy for laboratory
testing.
 Perform laboratory tests and analyses according to established laboratory protocols
and procedures.
 Record laboratory results accurately and report findings to the responsible medical
staff.
 Conduct routine laboratory examinations and sample analyses including blood
grouping, typing, and compatibility tests.
 Collect blood and other specimens from patients while ensuring patient safety and
confidentiality.
 Ensure correct labeling of all specimens with appropriate patient identification
details.
 Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment including
spectrophotometers, colorimeters, flame photometers, and computer-controlled
analyzers.
 Maintain laboratory equipment records and daily work logs.
 Clean, maintain, and recalibrate laboratory equipment as required.
 Prepare reagents and ensure laboratory supplies are available for daily operations.
 Monitor laboratory stock levels and request supplies when necessary.
 Implement quality assurance and quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and
reliability of laboratory results.
 Immediately notify doctors and relevant medical staff of critical laboratory values
with proper documentation.
 Enter laboratory results and clinical data into computer systems for reporting and
storage.
 Ensure safe laboratory practices and adherence to infection prevention and control
standards.
 Provide technical support and clarification of test results to doctors and other team
members.
 Work effectively in remote and rural outreach locations, including overnight stays
when required.
 Apply problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to maintain effective teamwork
within the mobile clinic team.
 Support performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives within the
laboratory services.
 Promote the organization’s mission, vision, and values in all activities.
 Perform any other duties assigned by supervisors.

Skills and qualifications

Qualification, Education and Work Experience required
 Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Laboratory
Technology.
 Minimum three (3) years of professional experience in laboratory services.
 Previous experience working in mobile clinics, outreach programs, or remote
healthcare areas is highly desirable.
 Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
 Demonstrated conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
 Knowledge of laboratory diagnostic procedures and medical technology services.
 Experience in community engagement, mobilization, and capacity building is an
advantage.
 Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
 Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
 Ability and willingness to work in remote rural areas including overnight stays.
 Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
 Familiarity with local community culture and context.
 Fluency in Somali and working knowledge of English is desirable.
 Good computer skills, including data entry and reporting
