Job Title: Translator and Admin Assistant
Reporting to: Programme Officer, or anyone delegated management responsibility by the Programme Manager
Location: HALO Mogadishu Offices
Hours: Sunday to Thursday, 08.00 – 16.00 (may include travel to the field on the Fridays and Saturdays)
Leave: 15 days
Contract: 6 months (including 2-month probation period with chances of renewal or extension)

In doing these activities, The HALO Trust coordinates with various stakeholders, including the Somali Explosive Management Authority (SEMA). The Translator and Admin Assistant will play a crucial role in facilitating effective communication between HALO HQ, field staff, SEMA Officers and other key stakeholders. Based in Mogadishu, this position is essential to supporting the programme in day-to-day management efforts, both through real-time spoken translation and translation of written documents, such as policy documents, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), presentations and training packages. The role also extends to administration tasks such as filing documents, diary management and general support to the Programme Manager. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to HALO Somalia's mission in a dynamic and challenging environment, promoting effective communication, and understanding across diverse stakeholders.
The responsibilities outlined below highlight key duties for this role. The tasks may extend beyond this, but the Translator is not expected to perform technical tasks without appropriate training or guidance.
Role and Responsibilities
The Translator and Admin Assistant will be based at HALO’s country headquarters in Mogadishu. The role also involves travel to various locations, including field locations, to translate specialised training to staff. Accommodation, travel, and food costs will be covered by HALO.
Interpretation Activities
- Real-time translation in person-to-person and group settings.
- Translation of activities on minefield tasks.
- Providing translation at meetings, training lessons or events.
Written Translation Activities
- High-quality translation of documents from English to Somali and vice versa.
- Assisting with the delivery of training materials.
- Conducting interviews and gathering stories/data from communities.
General Duties
- Adherence to HALO's core values and standards.
- Familiarity with and adherence to HALO policies and procedures.
- Flexibility and willingness to perform tasks within diverse operating environments.
- Willingness to stay in demining camps and undertake responsibilities in challenging environments.
Skills and qualifications
Required
- Fluent spoken and written Somali and excellent spoken and written English.
- Attention to detail (spelling/grammar) with good literacy and numeracy skills.
- Strong ICT and computer skills, including document formatting.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse team.
- Comfortable speaking in front of various audiences, including government and military representatives.
Desirable
- Previous experience as an English/Somali Translator.
- Experience working with NGOs and remote communities.
- Familiarity with the mine action sector.
- Experience in projects related to gender and women's empowerment.
- Teaching or presentation experience to diverse audiences.
- Prior experience in challenging conditions and unconventional work routines.
