SOS Children’s Villages Somalia has officially been working in Somalia since 1985. SOS is currently working in 134 countries worldwide. SOS Children’s Villages invites applications from suitably qualified and interested candidates who fulfill the eligibility criterion for the below position

Position Title: Agri-Veterinary officer  

Reporting To: FS Manager                                                   

Location: Mogadishu but frequently travelling to Afgoi,Balcad and Jowhar

JOB SUMMARY

The Agri-Veterinary Officer will spearhead the design and implementation of agricultural and animal health interventions. This role involves collaborating closely with field teams, community members, and partners to enhance food security and income generation. The officer will provide both technical and managerial leadership for all agricultural and veterinary aspects of the NORAD-funded program. The position ensures the effective delivery of livestock and crop production services, builds local capacity, and supports climate-adaptive and sustainable practices in line with the program's goals. This role is crucial for ensuring the health of livestock, which directly impacts food security and agricultural productivity.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1.   Technical support Agricultural and Veterinary Services

  • Promote integrated crop-livestock systems to boost productivity and sustainability.
  • Support farmers in climate-smart agriculture practices.
  • Engage in research to improve veterinary practices and animal production.
  • Assist in the distribution of agricultural inputs (seeds, tools, fertilizers).
  • Advise on soil fertility, crop rotation, and pest/disease management.
  • Conduct diagnosis, treatment, and vaccination of livestock against common diseases.
  • Provide training and extension services to farmers on animal health, nutrition, breeding, and disease control.
  • Conduct health assessments and diagnose diseases in livestock.
  •  Implement vaccination programs and disease control measures.
  • Monitor livestock disease outbreaks and report to relevant authorities.

 

2.   Capacity Building and Community Engagement:

  • Conduct training workshops for farmers and agricultural workers.
  • Mapping capacity needs assessment of the different stakeholders involving in agricultural and livestock.
  • Conduct and organize regular farm field schools and structured awareness sessions.
  • Train community-based animal health workers (CAHWs) and support their supervision in carrying out designated activities.
  • Facilitate participatory needs assessments and baseline surveys.

3.   Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:

·         Develop indicators and tools for tracking the impact of livestock/agricultural interventions.

·         Ensure timely and quality reporting (weekly, monthly, quarterly).

·         Document best practices and lessons learned.

·         Maintain accurate records of services provided, animals treated, and training sessions conducted.

·         Contribute to project reports and documentation of success stories and lessons learned.

·         Assist in impact assessments and post-intervention monitoring

Skills and qualifications

1.   QUALIFICATION AND JOB COMPETENCIES

·         Candidate must have bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine, Animal Science, or Agriculture.

·         Candidate must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in veterinary and agricultural program management, preferably in Experience in humanitarian or development settings, preferably in pastoralist areas.

·         Knowledge of common livestock diseases and their treatment.

·         Familiarity with pastoralist/agro-pastoralist systems and climate resilience approaches.  

·         Strong knowledge of livestock production systems and sustainable agriculture.

·         Proven team leadership and project management skills.

·         Excellent written and verbal communication and training skills in English; local language skills an asset
