GREDO has in depth experience operating in Somalia fragile context and first-hand experience working with local communities delivering a range of humanitarian, recovery, resilience, and development interventions with a focus on addressing Food Security, Livelihoods, Nutrition, Health and WASH services, Peacebuilding, Education, Protection, and Advocacy funded by a wide range of donors and partners.
Position Summery.
The project assistant is the primary focal person and beneficiary contact at community level and responsible in day-to-day field level activity implementation. The candidate will be responsible to promote and implement high quality community level optimal nutrition, health mobilization and hygiene promotion activities. The position holder will lead combined community engagement campaigns e.g. dietary education, behavior change, nutrition screening, hygiene promotion. He/she will capacitate Community Health Workers (CHWs). He/she reports to the project Officer.
Key Responsibilities.
The Project Assistants core responsibilities will include but not limited to the following:
· Supports CHWs and Community groups e.g. support groups, mobilization & sensitization, active case finding (screening) within communities, Follow up of OTP cases, absentees/defaulters.
· Ensure all criteria are respected and understood by the teams, including admission, and clear referral pathways e.g. when and how to refer and where to refer to.
· Lead and organize interactive door to door or community level meetings or campaigns to ensure comprehensive community outreach and mobilization are delivered to communities.
· Conduct referral of emergency cases from communities to health and nutrition facilities and/or to the hospital and share with necessary channels and service provides for support.
· Participate community level initiatives e.g. hygiene promotion campaigns and through CHWs promote optimal hygiene practices for example promoting handwashing practices at five critical times.
· With support from IYCF officer prepare preventive messages on malnutrition and health including key infant and young child feeding messages, preparing, and printing hygiene and nutrition IEC materials, and facilitate FM Radio integrated messaging on hygiene and nutrition.
· Promote better hygiene and sanitation practices including proper solid waste disposal, accessing latrines to stop open defecation and dissemination of public health risks including waterborne related diseases.
· Consistently lead the formation of IYCF groups and training them on IYCF package, kitchen gardening and distribute gardening inputs.
· With the support of the agronomist and IYCF Officer conduct awareness, mobilization, sensitization and beneficiary selection using community based approaches.
· Assist in the capacity building processes of the Community Health Workers (CHWs) through proper training. Provide regular and consistent technical assistance e.g. optimal IYCF practice.
· To assess mothers and their children and identify specific feeding support needs and in severe cases immediately refer to nearest service provider in the area.
· Through community mobilization and family visits refer children for intensive nutritional/medical care as required.
· To identify mothers and train them on mother MUAC lead approaches and capacitate them to become peer educators in their home villages, and to support them to undertake sensitization and referral to the Child Friendly Space or nearest service provider e.g. Health and Nutrition facilities.
· Work very closely with the project agronomist and IYCF officer to implement nutrition promotion activities e.g. kitchen gardening training for IYCF support groups and support group member’s grow nutritious rich vegetables with practical application of useful extension knowledge.
- Through project officers participate in field level assessment or evaluation e.g. PDMs data collection, baselines, monitoring surveys, case studies, and document success stories etc.
· Provide regular feedback from community mobilization, education, and nutrition activities of the program e.g. challenges.
· Help with activity verification and monitoring activities (referrals and program quality) at supported communities to ensure smooth, high-quality program implementation.
· Assist the preparation of advocacy meetings and awareness raising sessions at the community level, together with Community Health Workers (CHWs), village agents and together with teams form other program sectors.
· Assist in the collection and compiling process of project data regularly, including case studies, success stories and photographs.
· Assist the process of the community-based activities such as EPI, nutrition screening, health education and defaulter tracing are done properly.
· Actively participate in the identification and management of any disaster or epidemics.
· Conduct community mobilization on all the project activities, e.g. beneficiary sensitizations, committee trainings or meetings and encourage community active participation.
· Assist in the development and implementation of project work plan and assist in preparation of program reports e.g. Monthly and weekly activity progress to your supervisor.
· Carry out other duties assigned to you by your supervisor.
Skills and qualifications
Qualifications: Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience.
· Diploma or equivalent in nutrition, nursing, public health or related fields.
· At least 3 years of prior experience in community work, training and coaching rural community, with good understanding on principles of extension proven problem solving and decision making skills.
· Strong sense of responsibility and ability to work under minimal supervision;
· Ability and willingness to cope with high workload and sometimes under challenging working environments.
· Have good engagement with community & experience in community mobilization.
· Ability and willingness to frequently travel and stay at the field.
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in diverse teams
· Ability to work in and contribute to team building environment and capacity to relate with other stakeholders.
· Good knowledge of local context, local community and proficiency in written and clearly spoken Somali language is mandatory.
· Strong computer skills and ability to use standard computing packages such as word and excel.
