Position: English Lecturer
Reports to: HoD English Department   
Contract Type: Full-time (with potential for renewal based on performance)

1. Background

Puntland State University (PSU), located in Garowe, the capital city of Puntland, Somalia, is a leading higher education institution dedicated to academic excellence and professional development. PSU aims to provide quality education to develop the skills and knowledge needed for the socio-economic advancement of the Puntland region and beyond. To strengthen its teaching capacity, PSU is seeking a qualified and experienced English Lecturer to join the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

2. Purpose of the Position

The English Lecturer will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in English Language and Literature. The primary objective is to enhance students' proficiency in English communication, academic writing, critical thinking, and literary analysis.

 

3. Duties and Responsibilities

The English Lecturer will perform the following key duties:

1.        Teach undergraduate English courses including, but not limited to, English Composition, Communication Skills, Linguistics, and Literature.

2.      Develop course syllabi, lesson plans, and relevant instructional materials aligned with the university's curriculum standards.

3.       Implement innovative teaching strategies that promote interactive and student-centered learning.

4.      Supervise and mentor students in their academic projects, research, and assignments.

5.      Design and administer exams, quizzes, and other evaluation tools to assess student performance.

6.      Provide timely feedback and maintain academic records of students’ progress.

7.      Participate in academic research in the field of English language and literature.

8.      Publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals or present papers at academic conferences.

9.      Engage in continuous professional development to stay current with teaching methodologies and subject knowledge.

10.   Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development, research projects, and departmental activities.

11.     Participate in community outreach programs that promote literacy and language skills in Puntland.

12.    Foster partnerships with local and international organizations that support education and English language learning.

Skills and qualifications

1.       Education: Master’s degree in English, Linguistics, Literature, or a related field from a recognized institution.

2.      Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience at the university level or equivalent academic institution.

3.      Proven track record of effective teaching and student engagement.

4.      Experience in curriculum development, research, and academic publishing is an added advantage.

5. Duration and Terms of Employment

The English Lecturer position is a full-time role based at PSU’s campus in Garowe. The initial contract is for one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance.
