Overview of Role

As a Community Liaison Officer (CLO) at MAG Somalia/Somaliland, your role is pivotal in implementing MAG's Small Arms and Light Weapons Risk Education (SALW RE) program across Somaliland. This role involves regular travel, including overnight and multi-day trips, to carry out these vital activities.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement and Data Collection:

  • Liaise with affected communities, local authorities, government bodies, NGOs, INGOs, and other relevant stakeholders in the assigned governorate to gather and provide essential information for operational planning.
  • Deliver targeted Small Arms Light Weapons risk education sessions.
  • Provide training and support to key individuals to enable them to implement SALW RE activities in at-risk communities.
  • Field test resources, including SALWRE materials, prioritization tools, and equipment, as instructed.
  • Report the progress of activities to the Community Liaison Team Leader (CLTL).
  • Record the impact of projects and the need for future work by collecting case studies, photographs, videos, needs assessments, and evaluation reports.
  • Fulfill any other duties requested by the CLTL.

General Responsibilities:

  • Work within the framework of MAG's core values, promoting its ethos and mission statement.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to achieve program and department business plan objectives.
  • Ensure familiarity with and adhere to all MAG policies and procedures, staying informed about MAG activities.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the post as required.

Skills and qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • Fluent in local languages with basic to intermediate English.
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in a similar role, with transferable skills.
  • Excellent networking skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and enthusiastic.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interactions with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in the Somali language is essential for effective communication with the local communities and authorities.

Desirable Qualities:

  • Familiarity with Somali culture.
  • Experience in using participatory techniques to gather information in at-risk communities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for extended periods as required.
