Job Title:  English Language Teacher (1 Position)

Location: Hargeisa, Somaliland
Employment Type: Part -time, pro-rata at 0.6 Full Time Earnings (24 hours per week, including up to 12 teaching hours, 16-month contract)
Eligibility: Open to Somaliland residents and diaspora

Windle Trust International (WTI) is a non-governmental organisation with a strong history of delivering high-quality education programmes in conflict-affected regions. Our newest initiative in Somaliland focuses on elevating English language proficiency, particularly among adult learners, as well as within teacher education institutions. This programme is designed to address the critical shortage of skilled English language teachers, contributing to broader educational outcomes and socio-economic development in the region.

Project Overview
WTI is implementing multiple English Language Teaching programmes in Somaliland, focusing on improving the English language proficiency of adult learners, including teachers. The goal is to enhance educational outcomes across primary and secondary schools, as well as institutions of higher education. We are now recruiting one additional English Language Teacher who will be assigned based on project needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach English language classes to adult learners using culturally relevant and curriculum-based teaching materials.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of a curriculum for English Language training, including the design of teaching materials.
  • Provide school-based language support for teachers who are improving their English language proficiency.
  • Conduct baseline assessments to determine learners' English proficiency and tailor classes accordingly, following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels.
  • Participate in continuous assessments and progress evaluations to ensure effective learning and achievement of set outcomes.
  • Engage with local schools and institutions to ensure long-term capacity-building and knowledge-sharing.
  • Collaborate with local trainers to develop a cadre of future English language teacher trainers who can sustain the training model beyond the project’s initial phase.

Skills and qualifications

Essential

  • CELTA, TESOL, or equivalent English Language Teaching certification.
  • A Bachelor's degree in any field
  • At least 2 years of English language teaching experience
  • Experience developing curriculum, schemes of work, and lesson plans
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in conducting language assessments.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to develop curriculum content and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Native level fluency in both spoken and written English.

Desirable

  • A Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field, DELTA, or Qualifed Teacher Status with an emphasis on English as a Second Language.
  • Experience in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).
  • Experience in teacher training or coaching.
  • Knowledge of the Somali language.
