COOPI aims to help the world’s poorest to improve their access to healthcare, food, and financial security, and to overcome their special vulnerability to wars, civil conflicts and natural disasters. COOPI in Somalia

COOPI has been active with its humanitarian and resilience programs in Somalia since 1984. COOPI has been implementing emergency and long-term resilience building projects including food security & livelihoods, water and sanitation and health, to improve the living conditions of thousands of vulnerable families.

COOPI has been providing response and supporting the most basic and pressing needs of communities in Southwest State, South Central, Banadir, Jubaland and Somaliland. COOPI has a long-standing presence in those locations providing both emergency humanitarian support and building resilient livelihoods through a multi-sectoral approach with specific focus on crisis affected populations. COOPI's main operational and coordination offices are located in Mogadishu, Baidoa and Dollow. COOPI also has a support and regional office in Nairobi.

Assistant Nurtitionist

The background of an assistant in nutrition typically encompasses a combination of education, training, and experience related to nutrition and health.

Main Responsibilities

• Assist in conducting nutritional assessments by collecting data such as anthropometric measurements (e.g., height, weight, mid-upper arm circumference) and dietary information from clients or program participants.

• Maintain accurate records of assessments, measurements, and client interactions in accordance with organizational protocols and data management systems.

• Help develop and deliver nutrition education materials and presentations to individuals or groups, providing information on healthy eating practices and dietary guidelines.

• Participate in community outreach activities to promote nutrition programs and engage with target populations, including vulnerable groups.

• Assist in the implementation of nutrition programs and interventions, ensuring that activities are carried out effectively and according to established protocols.

• Collect data on program outcomes, participant feedback, and other relevant metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition initiatives.

• Work closely with nutritionists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care and support for individuals identified as at risk of malnutrition.

• Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, organizing files, and preparing reports related to nutrition programs.

• Identify individuals who require further evaluation or specialized care and facilitate referrals to appropriate healthcare or nutrition services.

• Participate in training and educational opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills related to nutrition and health.

• Encourage individuals and families to adopt healthier eating habits through positive reinforcement and support.

Skills and qualifications

Educational Qualifications:

Degree or Diploma in Nutrition or Related Field: A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, public health, or a related field is often preferred. Some positions may accept a diploma or associate degree in nutrition or health sciences.

Experience:

• Previous experience in nutrition, health education, community outreach, or a related field is often preferred. This can include internships, volunteer work, or employment in healthcare settings, schools, or community organizations.

• Experience working with diverse populations and understanding the cultural factors that influence dietary practices can be beneficial.

Skills and Competencies:

• A solid understanding of basic nutrition science, dietary guidelines, and public health nutrition practices.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with individuals and groups and deliver nutrition education.

• Ability to build rapport with clients and work collaboratively with healthcare professionals and team members.

• Strong organizational skills to manage data entry, record-keeping, and program implementation tasks effectively.

• Familiarity with data collection and documentation practices, including the use of software for record-keeping.

• Ability to identify issues related to nutrition and assist in developing appropriate solutions or referrals.
