Job description

1. Identification

Lutheran World Federation Kenya- Somalia, Dadaab and Kakuma Program is seeking to recruit a National staff for the following position;

2.  Unit Summary:

Lutheran World Federation Department for World Services Kenya/Somalia runs 21 primary schools and 13 ECDE centers within Kakuma Refugee Camp. The schools have both national teachers and refugee teachers. The program is seeking to recruit a Kenyan national for the following position of teacher tutor to be based in Kakuma refugee Camp.

3. Overall Purpose/Broad Function:

Reporting to the head teacher, the deputy head teacher is responsible for the overall management of the institution, planning and implementation of curricular and co- curricular activities & events, coordinating the BOM, PA activities and implementation of government and organizational policies and programs as the principle assistant of the head teacher. The deputy head teacher provides technical guidance to the teachers to develop teachers’ professional plans, execute and report, oversee school academic programs, ensure authentic data collection and dissemination.

4.  Key Duties and Responsibilities:

·       Arranges the discharge of the head teachers functions at any time S/he is absent and maintain the caring ethos of the school and nurture relationships between the school management, staff, parents and pupils’

·       Takes minutes during staff meetings

·       Ensure teachers report for duty in the prescribed working times and also ensuring that the  teachers on duty update the occurrence book on a daily basis

·       In consultation with teachers and head teacher, plan and execute school time table to coordinate curricular and co-curricular implementation

·       Lead in the development of detailed school calendar of events; In consultation with head teacher, plans and executes details of school functions e.g. sports days, open days, preps etc

·       Assist the head teacher in lesson allocation to teachers and coordinates and prepares relief time tables when some members of staff are unavailable for their duties it also includes preparation of teachers’ duty roster.

·       Working closely with teachers and head teacher, maintains high discipline and ensures truancy and absenteeism are minimized in school

·       Meets with school prefects regularly to deal with student concerns

·       Chairs the disciplinary committee while ensuring alternative forms of disciplining learner and the ban of  CORPORAL PUNISHMENT is school

·       Keep records of discipline cases Ensures teachers are on duty as programmed and daily general cleaning of the school is done

·       Delegating responsibilities to teachers and other non-teaching staff in school

·       In coordination with the head teacher, checks and marks all teachers’ professional records regularly.

·       Ensure teachers keep all progress records for tracking pupils performance while ensuring Value added progress (VAP) at every stage

·       Ensures pupils get back their marked exam scripts of CATs and terminal exams

·       Collates examination papers and keeps them for reference

·       Ensures teachers mark the daily class register and keep a file for filled registers

·       Effective implementation of prescribed primary education curriculum subjects

·       Be exemplary to others by being an effective classroom teacher with 2 teaching lessons a week and by preparing, keeping and use of all professional teaching records.

·       Ensures pupils get back their marked exam scripts of CATs and terminal exams

·       Collates examination papers and keeps them for reference

·       Ensure CATs and terminal exams are conducted, marked and exam analysis applied to improve curriculum delivery.

·       Assist the head teacher in the management of all school resources.

·       Assist in the maintenance of updated school inventory.

·       Promotes good relationship with teachers and students for a conducive learning atmosphere.

·       Facilitate community participation in education.

·       Promote close partnership with in co-curricular activities with other schools

·       Facilitate students’ participation in co-curricular activities.

·       Demonstrate effective leadership through good professional practice.

-        5.  Supervisory Responsibilities:

-        Teacher tutors

-        Teachers

-        School support staff.

Skills and qualifications

Education/Professional Designations/Experience:

-        Must have at least a P1 teacher training certificate from a recognized teacher training college.

-        Must be registered as a teacher by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) with a valid TSC registration certificate.

-         Must have served as primary school teacher in a refugee camp set up or in an informal settlement either rural or urban for a minimum period of three (3) years.

-        Demonstrate ability to supervise, mentor and provide professional support to other teachers;

-       Experience in a similar role will an added advantage.

7. Other Specific Skill Requirements:

-        Ability to manage and use e-learning/digital devices for teaching and learning, prepare and upload learner content on devices, data collection and analysis

-        Experience of working in refugee schools or with refugee community in the camp or urban set up.

-        Exemplary guidance and counselling skills, and experience in provision of psychosocial support

-        Ability to use e-learning devices for teaching, data collection, analysis and dissemination

-        Passionate for inclusive education

-        High level of integrity, commitment and professional responsibility.

-        Ability to tolerate cultural, educational and religious diversity in the work place.

-        Passionate for inclusive education and some experience in mainstreaming child protection and gender issues in education

-        High level of integrity, commitment and professional responsibility.

-        Ability to tolerate cultural, educational and religious diversity in the work place.

-        Good analytical and problem solving skills.
