Job description
Overview of position
-
Our client in Somalia aims to produce a range of communications products, which increase awareness & understanding of our work such as brochures, posters, flyers, multicolour infographics, books, manuals, reports newsletters & other items.
-
They seek to hire a graphic designer to provide high level visual branding, graphic design services for advocacy & communication materials in a high pressure environment with rapid turnaround for delivery within short deadlines. The incumbent need to be able to understand our clients global corporate brand guidelines & find creative ways to use it in everyday communications in English & in Somali.

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Specialist, the Graphic Designer will be responsible for providing our client with graphic design services. The incumbent is expected to work on variety of products ranging from reports, brochures, factsheets, major publications, posters & other graphics on several areas.

All publications are primarily advocacy & resource mobilization materials aimed at various target audiences.
Role objectives
Main activities will include:
-
Design attractive, engaging & modern visual materials to convey key messages to various target audiences in compliance with our clients branding, such as design elements for web based platforms (websites, newsletters) & infographics, posters, leaflets, logos, brochures & any other design required to meet our clients communications objectives.

Creation & development of initial design concepts & work on the layout / artwork / illustration for the guidelines & materials as required.
-
Develop, adapt, review & edit artworks, photos, charts & other graphics in the document.
-
Undertake social media campaign by preparing SM cards, graphic design support for tweets, images, concept notes, agendas, profiles, invitations, zoom presentations, etc.

Concept, design & procurement of artworks of visibility items for project teams & for staff use.

Any other duties assigned.
Expected outputs:
-
Initial design & layout of materials for different audiences.
-
First draft of the materials for different audiences in English & Somali.
-
Final copies of all materials & online programs in English & Somali for print.
-
Specifications of the to all the designed materials to facilitate printing & dissemination.
-
At least 6 client related activities brochure in English & Somali.
-
At least 4 reports.
-
At least 20 promotional leaflets, factsheets, infographics, Prezis & web page designs, brochures, logos, event signage, corporate materials (signposts, stationary, Power Point templates, Christmas card, etc.), promotional material branding or any other piece upon request as requested.

Understand & comply with our clients branding guidelines & / or other branding / editorial / style guidelines & manuals as instructed.

Finalize & copy edit relevant content assigned in consultation with our client.
Project reportingThis role will work under the direct supervision of the Communications Specialist.
Skills and qualifications
Key competencies
-
Bachelor’s degree in industrial art, graphic design or diploma on completion of training course on professional graphic design.
-
A minimum 5 years of experience in working as a Graphic Designer in a multicultural, international environment, experience in branding agency or in producing designs for non profits or advocacy campaigns a strong plus.
-
At least 3 years strong graphic design skills, including the mastery of all standard design software included in the Adobe Creative Suite.
-
Show a clear & mature style of design, demonstrating an understanding of the communication requirements of a UN agency.
-
Proven experience of graphic production from start to published / printed product with knowledge of printing processes (offset & digital) & colour management.
-
In depth knowledge of Adobe CS platforms, specifically InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop.
-
Knowledge of Premiere or other video editing software could be an advantage.
-
Ability to create designs for the web & in CMS platforms, such as WordPress, Drupal or other content management systems.
-
Basic CSS & HTML capabilities.
-
Ability to create a campaign concept & translate it across different mediums / experiences.
-
Good understanding of new & evolving technologies & digital platforms.
-
Attention to detail combined with the ability to work quickly to meet multiple deadlines.
-
Ability to work within a team of professional staff from diverse technical & cultural backgrounds & expertise.
-
Experience working in the Horn of Africa & in the Somalia context, will be considered as an advantage.

In depth knowledge of the MS Office suite of software.
-
Excellent communication skills & a strong commitment to customer service in creating visual concepts that meet the needs of the client & are effective with audiences.
-
Strong leadership & consensus building ability working in a complex, matrixed environment with different stakeholders to ensure the continual evolution of drafts toward a final product.

This role has no team management responsibility.
