Job Description: Senior Database Engineer

Location

Background

Amtel is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Senior Database Engineer to lead the design, administration, optimization, and security of mission-critical fintech databases. The role requires deep expertise in SQL Server Enterprise, data engineering, and performance optimization within high-availability, high-transaction financial environments. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring data reliability, security, and regulatory compliance while supporting business growth.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Administer, maintain, and optimize SQL Server Enterprise 2022 databases
• Design and manage High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions
• Implement and manage backup, restore, and maintenance strategies
• Ensure database security, including encryption, access control, and auditing
• Design and implement ETL/ELT pipelines using SSIS and T-SQL
• Support data ingestion from APIs, flat files, and staging systems
• Design and maintain fintech data models for transactions, ledgers, and accounts
• Optimize database performance through query tuning, indexing, and partitioning
• Monitor and troubleshoot performance bottlenecks and system issues
• Develop reports, dashboards, and analytics using BI tools
• Ensure compliance with regulatory and data privacy standards (AML, KYC, GDPR)
• Support knowledge transfer, documentation, and capacity building
• Collaborate with engineering and business teams to align data solutions with business needs

Skills

• Expert knowledge of SQL Server Enterprise 2022 architecture and internals
• Strong experience with Always On Availability Groups and Failover Clustering
• Advanced skills in database security (TDE, row-level security, auditing)
• Strong experience with SSIS and custom ETL using T-SQL
• Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts (OLTP, OLAP, star/snowflake schemas)
• Advanced SQL query writing for analysis, aggregation, and transformation
• Experience with Power BI, SSRS, or similar BI tools
• Strong understanding of fintech data structures (transactions, wallets, ledgers)
• Experience using performance tools (Execution Plans, DMVs, Extended Events)
• Familiarity with data archiving and retention strategies
• Ability to troubleshoot complex database and performance issues

Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in SQL Server administration or data engineering
• Proven experience working in fintech, banking, or financial systems
• Experience managing large-scale, real-time transaction databases
• Experience supporting high-availability and high-performance systems
• Experience in documentation, knowledge transfer, and capacity building
• Experience aligning data solutions with business and regulatory requirements
• Experience integrating AI or advanced analytics is an added advantage

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
• Relevant professional certifications are an added advantage, including:
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
• Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate (Power BI)
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate
