Job description

SOS Children’s Villages invites applications from suitably qualified and interested candidates who fulfill the eligibility criterion for the below positions of Auxiliary Nurse.

Job Title: Temporary Auxiliary Nurse (4 position)

Location: Heliwa-Mogadishu

Job Summary:

The employee is expected to provide a high standard of promoting optimum health and preventive health care, thereby contributing to a safe, efficient and effective service to patients. The employee will also provide assistance to the doctors, nurses and the other medical care team where appropriate, recognizing that the effective management of hospital depends on effective communication and participation of all members of the team.

Direct Supervisor: Hospital Nurse.

Key Area of responsibility:

Community mobilization

  • Conducts sensitizations and mobilizations designed to teach patients and communities about nutrition, hygiene, family planning and other health care preventive aspects etc.
  • Advice patients/ beneficiaries.
  • Assist community health and nutrition workers on community centered interventions
  • Refers more serious cases to the appropriate medical facility or to a visiting medical practitioner.
  • Work closely with CNWs & CHWs to mobilize communities to seek treatment
  • Receive referrals from CNWs & follow up patients enrolled in nutrition program
  • Train mothers on Family led MUAC

Treatment & management of nutrition and related compliations.

  • Asssit the nurses & doctors in admitting children who meet SC admission criteria
  • Asssist hospital nurse in monitoring and supervision of all patients in the concerned area
  • Take & record vital measuements – Temperature, pulse, respiration rate, weight, height & weight for height
  • Assist the nurse to administer treatment according to IMAM & IMCI protocols
  • Perform apetite test to determine whether to admit into SC
  • Assist the nurse to administer medications prescribed by the doctors & record in patient cards
  • Provide care for patients in a clean & safe environment
  • Provide appropriate thermal care to atients admitted in SC
  • Inform the nurse and doctor when the childs condition deteroriates for prompt treatment
  • Assst the nurse in conducting investigations & sample collection
  • Feed with appropriate therapeutic feeds children admitted in SC using relevant SC milk therapeutic feeding protocols
  • Support mothers to feed children using appropriate feeding techniques
  • Follow on the ambulance referrals and ensure emediate transportation facilities to critically ill patients.
  • Contribute to hospital triage and patient sceerning
  • Prepare timely therapeutic milk preparations & ensure patients are fed at the prescribed timeCompleting and updating the patient files to ensure a track of patient progress
  • Ensure adequate availability of all medical and therapeutic feed supply and ensure stock is pre-positioned as planned by discussing with logistics
  • Report on progress and any problems in a timely manner
  • Through liaison with the community mobilizers and nutrition volunteers, provide effective follow up of cases
  • Provide key health and education messages to beneficiaries based on the protocol and guidelines.
  • Follow-up and ensure good interaction with the beneficiaries
  • Perform any other duties requested by the immediate supervisor

Health & hygiene promotion

  • Asssist caretakers to learn appropriate feeding practices
  • Assist mothers to learn good hygiene and handwashing practices
  • Inform nursing staf if a child needs vaccination against measle and organize for vaccination
  • Ensure that all mothers in the SC are provided wit soap & detergent to improve hygiene
  • Work with the nutrition nurses and other staff to ensure patients learn IYCF practices

Conduct Pateint and community mobilztion

  • Ensure all mother/ care giver are aware the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the Initial 6 months.
  • Discourage and educate mothers on the dangers of bottle feeding by exchanging bottles to cups and spoons.
  • Participate and Dessiminate public health and nutrition education messages to improve knowledge, attitude and practice.

Skills and qualifications

  • Secondary school certificate
  • 3-6 months course on public health, nurse, nutrition or related field
  • Minimum 1-2 years of progressive experience in health or nutrition including working in SC
  • Previous experience in NGOs/Donor funded programs is preferable.
  • Strong knowledge of child rights and child protection.
  • Able to pay attention to detail and monitors the quality of inventory
  • Proactive, result-oriented, independent, able to identify and carry out duties with minimum supervision
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, spreadsheets)
  • Excellent understanding of the local context and able to maintain good working relationships with team members.
  • Strong communication skills- both writen and verbal.
