Duty Station: Qansax Dheere, Bay Region, Somalia
Number of Positions: 5
Project: Provision of Integrated Emergency Health and Nutrition Services for Drought- and Conflict-Affected Communities in Qansax Dheere District.

1. About WRRS
Wamo Relief & Rehabilitation Services (WRRS) is a Somali humanitarian and development organization implementing integrated programmes in health, nutrition, WASH, livelihoods, resilience, protection and community development.
Under the Integrated Emergency Health and Nutrition Services project in Qansax Dheere District, WRRS will deploy Five midwives to strengthen maternal, newborn and reproductive health services at project-supported health facilities.
2. Position Purpose
The Midwife will provide quality, respectful and evidence-based maternal, newborn and reproductive health services, with a primary focus on antenatal care (ANC), skilled delivery, postnatal care (PNC), essential newborn care, family planning and appropriate referral services.
The Midwife will work closely with Clinical Officers, Nurses, the Health and Nutrition Officer, Health and Nutrition Manager, CHWs/FHWs and other facility staff to ensure safe and integrated MNCH service delivery.
3. Key Responsibilities
A. Antenatal Care (ANC)
- Provide quality ANC services in accordance with Ministry of Health guidelines and approved protocols.
- Conduct routine assessment and monitoring of pregnant women.
- Identify danger signs, high-risk pregnancies and complications requiring referral.
- Provide counselling on birth preparedness, complication readiness, nutrition, hygiene and maternal health.
- Promote timely ANC attendance and completion of recommended visits.
- Maintain accurate ANC registers and client records.
B. Skilled Delivery and Intrapartum Care
- Provide skilled and respectful maternity care to women during labour and delivery, within professional scope of practice.
- Monitor labour using appropriate tools and protocols.
- Conduct normal deliveries safely and manage immediate complications within the capacity of the facility.
- Recognize obstetric emergencies and facilitate timely referral.
- Provide immediate postpartum monitoring of mothers.
- Ensure appropriate infection prevention and control practices during delivery.
- Maintain accurate delivery records and documentation.
C. Postnatal Care (PNC)
- Provide quality PNC services to mothers and newborns.
- Monitor mothers for postpartum complications and provide appropriate care or referral.
- Provide counselling on maternal nutrition, breastfeeding, newborn care and danger signs.
- Promote timely postnatal follow-up and facility-based care.
- Ensure appropriate documentation of PNC services.
D. Essential Newborn Care
- Provide essential immediate newborn care following delivery.
- Support early initiation and promotion of breastfeeding.
- Assess newborns for danger signs and complications.
- Support appropriate newborn monitoring and follow-up.
- Facilitate timely referral of sick or at-risk newborns.
- Provide caregivers with counselling on newborn care, breastfeeding, hygiene and recognition of danger signs.
E. Family Planning and Reproductive Health
- Provide accurate information and counselling on available family planning methods.
- Provide family planning services within the midwife's professional scope and training.
- Support informed and voluntary decision-making by clients.
- Maintain confidentiality and respectful care.
- Refer clients requiring services beyond the facility's capacity.
F. Maternal and Newborn Referrals
- Identify maternal and newborn complications requiring higher-level care.
- Initiate and facilitate timely referrals in accordance with established referral procedures.
- Ensure appropriate documentation and communication during referrals.
- Coordinate with CHWs/FHWs to support follow-up of referred mothers and newborns.
- Strengthen linkages between community and facility-based MNCH services.
G. Integrated Nutrition and Child Health
- Integrate nutrition screening and counselling into maternal and newborn services.
- Promote appropriate maternal nutrition during pregnancy and lactation.
- Support identification and referral of pregnant and lactating women with acute malnutrition.
- Promote exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate infant and young child feeding practices.
- Support growth monitoring and child health activities where required.
- Coordinate with nutrition staff regarding clients requiring nutrition services.
H. Health Education and Community Outreach
- Provide health education to pregnant women, mothers, caregivers and community members.
- Promote key messages on ANC, skilled delivery, PNC, breastfeeding, newborn care, family planning and danger signs.
- Participate in community outreach and awareness activities.
- Work with CHWs/FHWs to encourage timely care-seeking and facility utilization.
- Support community identification and referral of pregnant women and newborns requiring care.
I. Records, Reporting and Data Quality
- Maintain complete and accurate maternal and newborn health records.
- Ensure timely completion of ANC, delivery, PNC and family planning registers.
- Contribute to routine project and Ministry of Health reporting.
- Ensure confidentiality and appropriate management of client information.
- Participate in data verification and quality improvement activities.
- Report service delivery challenges and critical gaps to the appropriate supervisor.
J. Quality, Safeguarding and Accountability
- Deliver services in accordance with Ministry of Health standards and WRRS procedures.
- Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control.
- Uphold respectful maternity care, confidentiality and client dignity.
- Apply protection, safeguarding, PSEA and accountability principles.
- Ensure women and newborns receive services without discrimination.
- Report safeguarding and protection concerns through established mechanism
Skills and qualifications
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Midwifery from a recognized institution.
- Valid professional registration/licence where applicable.
- Relevant experience providing midwifery services in a health facility.
- Demonstrated experience in ANC, skilled delivery and PNC.
- Experience in essential newborn care and identification of maternal and newborn danger signs.
- Experience providing or supporting family planning services.
- Experience in maternal and newborn referrals.
- Ability to maintain accurate clinical records and reports.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary health team.
- Fluency in Somali and working knowledge of English.
Desirable:
- Experience working in humanitarian or emergency health programmes.
- Experience in integrated health and nutrition programming.
- Training or experience in emergency obstetric and newborn care.
- Experience with community outreach and CHW programmes.
- Knowledge of Ministry of Health MNCH protocols and reporting systems.
- Previous experience with SHF/CBPF or other donor-funded humanitarian programmes.

6. Reporting Line
The Midwives will work under the supervision of the Clinical Officer and/or designated facility supervisor, with technical oversight from the Health and Nutrition Officer and Health and Nutrition Manager.
They will coordinate closely with Nurses, CHWs/FHWs and other health and nutrition personnel to ensure integrated maternal, newborn and reproductive health services.
