Introduction

Wadajir Community Boarding School (WCBS) is a community-owned educational institution located in Warder Town, Dollo Zone, Somali Regional State (DDS), Ethiopia. The school provides quality education to both boarding and day students from Warder and surrounding rural and pastoralist communities.

Position Summary

The Teacher – English and Amharic is responsible for planning, delivering, assessing, and continuously improving high-quality instruction in English and Amharic languages in accordance with the Ethiopian National Curriculum and the academic standards of Wadajir Community Boarding School.

The Teacher will develop students’ competencies in reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, literature, communication, and critical thinking.

The Teacher will use learner-centered, inclusive, participatory, and age-appropriate teaching methodologies to create an engaging and supportive learning environment.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, the Teacher will contribute to the academic, moral, social, and personal development of students through effective classroom management, mentoring, continuous assessment, academic support, student supervision, extracurricular activities, and boarding responsibilities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

A. Teaching and Learning

The Teacher shall:

  • Prepare annual, termly, weekly, and daily lesson plans.
  • Prepare schemes of work in accordance with the Ethiopian National Curriculum.
  • Deliver high-quality English and Amharic lessons.
  • Teach English language skills, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Teach Amharic language skills, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Teach appropriate English and Amharic literature according to the approved curriculum.
  • Develop students’ communication, presentation, reading, and writing skills.
  • Use learner-centered, participatory, inclusive, and interactive teaching methods.
  • Encourage active participation and student engagement.
  • Promote critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication.
  • Use appropriate teaching aids, digital resources, ICT, and other learning materials.
  • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning abilities and needs.
  • Provide differentiated instruction to students requiring additional academic support.
  • Encourage a positive reading culture among students.
  • Maintain effective classroom management and discipline.
  • Ensure that lessons are delivered according to the approved school timetable and curriculum.

B. Student Assessment

The Teacher shall:

  • Prepare quizzes, assignments, class exercises, tests, examinations, and other assessments.
  • Conduct continuous assessment in English and Amharic.
  • Assess students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
  • Assess students’ understanding of appropriate literature and language concepts.
  • Mark and record students’ work accurately and objectively.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students.
  • Identify students who require remedial or additional academic support.
  • Develop appropriate remedial and enrichment activities.
  • Maintain accurate and updated assessment records.
  • Analyze students’ academic performance and identify areas requiring improvement.
  • Prepare and submit examination results within agreed timelines.
  • Participate in examination preparation, administration, marking, and moderation where assigned.

C. Classroom Management

The Teacher shall:

  • Maintain discipline, order, and a positive learning environment.
  • Establish and maintain clear classroom rules and expectations.
  • Promote respectful communication and positive behaviour.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment.
  • Encourage student participation and mutual respect.
  • Ensure appropriate use and care of classroom resources.
  • Address classroom challenges professionally and constructively.
  • Identify and report serious disciplinary concerns to the Academic Coordinator or School Manager.
  • Promote positive discipline and avoid any form of corporal punishment or inappropriate treatment of students.

D. Student Support, Mentoring and Guidance

The Teacher shall:

  • Mentor and guide students in their academic and personal development.
  • Encourage regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Identify students experiencing learning difficulties and provide appropriate support.
  • Provide additional academic assistance where required.
  • Encourage students to develop confidence in English and Amharic communication.
  • Promote good moral values, respect, responsibility, honesty, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Support students facing academic or social challenges.
  • Communicate appropriately with parents and guardians regarding student progress when required.
  • Refer serious student welfare or protection concerns to the appropriate school authority.

E. Academic Administration and Record Keeping

The Teacher shall:

  • Maintain class registers and attendance records.
  • Prepare lesson notes and teaching materials.
  • Maintain accurate student academic and assessment records.
  • Prepare and submit examination results within agreed timelines.
  • Prepare student progress reports.
  • Maintain records of assignments, tests, examinations, and continuous assessments.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and curriculum review activities.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of teaching and learning materials.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and academic records.
  • Submit required academic reports to the Academic Coordinator on time.

F. English and Amharic Language Development

The Teacher shall:

  • Promote strong reading and writing habits among students.
  • Encourage students to read age-appropriate books and educational materials.
  • Organize or support reading clubs and language activities.
  • Support English and Amharic debate activities.
  • Organize or support spelling, writing, storytelling, poetry, public speaking, and language competitions.
  • Develop students’ oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Promote academic writing and comprehension skills.
  • Encourage students to use appropriate language in academic and school activities.
  • Promote appreciation of appropriate literature and cultural values.
  • Support students in developing confidence in both English and Amharic.

G. Co-curricular and Extracurricular Activities

The Teacher shall:

  • Participate in school clubs and extracurricular activities.
  • Support English and Amharic language and literature clubs.
  • Support debate, reading, writing, cultural, and public-speaking activities.
  • Participate in educational trips and school events.
  • Encourage students to participate in sports, debates, cultural programmes, and other activities.
  • Support student leadership and teamwork.
  • Participate in school celebrations, competitions, assemblies, and other academic activities.

H. Boarding Responsibilities

As a teacher in a boarding school, the Teacher shall:

  • Support student supervision when assigned.
  • Participate in evening study supervision according to the duty roster.
  • Provide academic assistance to boarding students.
  • Monitor students’ participation and concentration during supervised study periods.
  • Support school discipline and student welfare.
  • Encourage good study habits among boarding students.
  • Report student welfare, safeguarding, health, or disciplinary concerns to the Boarding Manager or relevant school authority.
  • Perform other reasonable boarding duties assigned by the school management.

I. Professional Development

The Teacher shall:

  • Attend staff meetings and professional development programmes.
  • Participate in workshops, training, and in-service learning.
  • Keep updated with the Ethiopian National Curriculum and relevant curriculum changes.
  • Keep updated with modern English and Amharic teaching methodologies.
  • Improve professional knowledge, teaching skills, and classroom practices.
  • Use professional reflection to improve teaching performance.
  • Share knowledge, resources, and good practices with fellow teachers.
  • Participate in peer learning and lesson observation activities where required.

  9. Maintain accurate attendance and academic records.
  10. Monitor students’ academic progress and identify learning gaps.
  11. Encourage reading, writing, debate, public speaking, poetry, storytelling, and cultural activities.
  12. Support student discipline, welfare, and academic development.
  13. Supervise students during assigned boarding duties.
  14. Participate in extracurricular activities and school events.
  15. Attend staff, departmental, and academic meetings.
  16. Maintain and properly use classroom resources and teaching materials.
  17. Promote ethical behaviour, respect, responsibility, discipline, and teamwork.
  18. Maintain professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and school leadership.

  20. Perform other reasonable duties assigned by the School Manager or Academic Coordinator.

Skills and qualifications

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate should meet the following qualifications and requirements:

A. Academic Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Education (B.Ed.) with specialization in English, Amharic, or both, or a closely related field.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in English Language, Amharic Language, Literature, Education, Linguistics, or a related discipline, combined with recognized teacher training, may also be considered.
  • A Diploma in Teacher Education or equivalent recognized teaching qualification may be considered where permitted by the applicable education regulations and school requirements.
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification, such as a Master’s Degree in Education, English, Amharic, Linguistics, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field, will be an added advantage.

B. Teaching Certification and Licensing

  • A valid teaching license or professional teaching certification recognized by the Ethiopian Ministry of Education or relevant education authority is highly desirable.
  • The candidate should be eligible to teach English and Amharic under the applicable Ethiopian education requirements.
  • Evidence of professional teaching certification and academic credentials should be provided during recruitment.

C. Professional Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant teaching experience in English and/or Amharic.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching English and Amharic within the Ethiopian education system is highly desirable.
  • Experience teaching according to the Ethiopian National Curriculum.
  • Experience in continuous assessment, examination preparation, marking, and student progress reporting.
  • Experience in learner-centered and inclusive teaching approaches.
  • Experience working in a boarding school is an advantage.
  • Experience supporting extracurricular activities, student clubs, debates, reading programmes, or cultural activities is an advantage.
  • Experience working with students from rural, pastoralist, or diverse community backgrounds is an advantage.

D. Language Requirements

The candidate should have:

  • Excellent command of Amharic, both written and spoken.
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
  • Strong ability to teach English language skills effectively.
  • Strong ability to teach Amharic language skills effectively.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with students, parents, colleagues, and school management.
  • Good academic writing and reporting skills in English.
  • Knowledge of other Ethiopian languages is an added advantage.

E. Curriculum and Pedagogical Knowledge

Terms of Employment

  • Duty Station: Wadajir Community Boarding School, Warder, Dollo Zone, Somali Regional State (DDS), Ethiopia.
  • Employment Type: Full-time.
  • Probation Period: Three (3) months.
  • Working Hours: As per the school timetable, including assigned boarding supervision duties where applicable.
  • Performance Review: Conducted annually by the School Manager and Academic Coordinator.
