 Objective of the role

We are currently seeking a highly talented Creative Writer and Storyteller who is fluent in both Somali and English to join our team. The role primarily involves developing content gathering plans, developing key interview questions, receiving Somali interviews and transforming them into engaging, human-cantered, and creative stories.

Responsibilities:

1.      Content Gathering: Make desk review and project information, prepare the necessary interview questions in both Somali and English and conduct interviews with individuals in Somaliland and Somalia, either in-person or remotely, and extract meaningful stories and experiences.

2.      Story Development: Transform the interviews into vibrant and compelling stories that effectively communicate the impact of our Humanitarian and Development Projects.

3.      Creativity: Apply creative writing techniques to enhance the storytelling aspect of the narratives, ensuring that they captivate and inspire the target audience.

4.      Editing and Proofreading: Review and revise written content for clarity, flow, grammar, and overall effectiveness.

5.      Video Storyboard: Develop Storyboard for video stories and guide editors in producing compelling and well-structured video stories.

6.      Cultural Sensitivity: Display a deep understanding and respect for the cultural nuances and context of Somali storytelling, ensuring that the stories are sensitive and resonate with the intended audience.

7.      Language fluency: Deliver clear and coherent translations from Somali to English while maintaining the essence and authenticity of the stories.

8.      Collaborative Approach: Work closely with the project team, including photographers, videographers, and designers, to represent the stories in various formats, such as written articles, social media content, videos, podcasts, etc.

9.      Research and Fact-checking: Conduct necessary research and fact-checking to ensure the accuracy and credibility of the stories.

10.  Deadlines: Meet assigned deadlines for story development and content delivery.

11.  Monitoring and Evaluation: Continuously monitor the impact and effectiveness of the stories and provide feedback to enhance future storytelling approaches.

12.  Professional Development: Stay updated with industry trends, storytelling techniques, and best practices to continually improve the quality of work.

Qualifications:

1.      Language Fluency: Native or advanced proficiency in both Somali and English, with exceptional written and oral communication skills in both languages.

2.      Creative Writing: Strong ability to craft engaging and impactful stories, demonstrating a flair for creativity.

3.      Cultural Knowledge: In-depth understanding of Somali culture, storytelling traditions, and narrative structures.

4.      Attention to Detail: Meticulous fact-checking abilities and excellent attention to detail to ensure accurate and well-crafted stories.

5.      Collaborative Spirit: Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, coordinating with various stakeholders to create cohesive and high-quality content.

6.      Flexibility: Adaptability to changing priorities and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

7.      Experience: Proven experience in creative writing, storytelling, or journalism, with a portfolio showcasing the ability to convert interviews into compelling narratives.
