Job description

The Project resilience/ Agronomist Officer is responsible for the overall management and implementation of the Agro activities and resources within the area of responsibilities s/he analyses the agricultural situation of the region. Assessments and plans agro interventions in consultation with the respective field management, technical supervisor team in Gedo. S/He implements the Agro activities according to delegation objectives, agreed budget frame and plan of action (PoA) and reports on the progress of the programme as required.

This is a national/resident position based in Luuq, Somalia.

Project resilience/ Agronomist Officer Responsibilities:

  • Developing better planting, cultivation and harvesting techniques, improving crop yield and solving problems for farmers
  • Visiting fields to collect seed, plant, and soil samples.
  • Testing samples for nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or other changes.
  • Conducting training on products and techniques through educational presentations.
  • Developing planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.
  • Researching, and promoting agricultural strategies to counter the effect of changes in soil, climate, and weather and pest damage.
  • Assisting with the plant sourcing, testing, and selection.
  • Keeping detailed records regarding fields, beneficiaries, crops, and samples.
  • Generating reports and presenting findings to SHRA/Trocaire organization and other project stakeholders.
  • Conducting training for farmers on good agricultural practices and techniques
  • Organizing and conducting field visit and other technical work
  • Responsible for beneficiaries selection process ,registration and verification
  • Identify project direct beneficiaries in collaboration with the local community representative and stakeholders from the local authority.
  • Identify the needs of farmers and farming practices used and formulation of an available achievable strategy to improve agricultural production within the project life cycle.
  • Preparation and facilitation of training materials and training of the project target beneficiaries on agricultural techniques.
  • Monitoring food security situation across Gedo using different food security indicators, such as rainfall, market and price, crop and livestock, and humanitarian reports,
  • Preparation and submission of weekly, monthly activities plans and monthly narrative reports of the project
  • Conduct field assessment and collect data for analysis for decision making.
  • Attending food security and livelihood cluster coordination meeting s and share the findings and recommendations.
  • Conduct community mobilization, sensitization, plan and implement distribution of agricultural inputs
  • Identify appropriate agricultural seeds and small scale agricultural tools relevant to the locally and target community in collaboration with local authority
  • Conduct regular field visits to project site and update Area project manager with the progress of project activities in the field
  • Work closely with the project M&E officer on project designing and implementation. Participate in Project monitoring and evaluation process throughout the project period
  • Ensure that all the seeds are adhered to in order to guarantee diseases free seed with the right generic quality.
  • Follow up, track crop and variety activities and address any bottlenecks and de-bottleneck accordingly avoid project hiccups.
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to be accountable to beneficiaries as it is a key SHRA commitment to beneficiaries.
  • Organize learning sessions as well as sharing best practices on resilience farming project in Luuq district

Additional job responsibilities

  • Assisting Inter-cluster multi-sectoral assessments during critical situations
  • Producing Case studies and success stories of the project beneficiaries
  • Any other work assigned by the supervisor

 Project resilience/ Agronomist Assistant responsibilities

  • Assist the project Resilience officer in developing and regularly updating a detailed project work plan guiding the project implementation plan.
  • Be involved in community mobilization, sensitization and plan and implement distribution of agricultural inputs.
  • Support in Beneficiary selections process, registration and verifications
  • Identify direct project beneficiaries in collaboration with the local community representatives and stakeholders from the government.
  • Identification of the needs of farmers and the farming practices used and formulation of an available achievable strategy to improve agricultural production within the limited resources to farmers.
  • Collaborating with project team organizing field days and exposure visits to project sites.
  • support training of project beneficiaries and prepare training reports
  • Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, quarterly activity plans and narrative reports of the project, and Submit to Project resilience/ Agronomist officer
  • Documenting and archiving project documents, taking minutes during project meetings.
  • Filing project information and photo bank, documenting complain feedback mechanism
  • Participate assessments and collect data from the field and analyses to feed planning and project proposals
  • Conduct regular field visits to project site with Project resilience/ Agronomist officer and update project with the progress of project activities in the field
  • Participate in Project monitoring and evaluation process throughout the project period
  • Attend food security and livelihood cluster meetings with partners and stakeholders in the field and attend clusters when assigned to attend
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to be accountable to beneficiaries as it is a key SHRA commitment to beneficiaries.
  • Support the Project Resilience/ Agronomist officer in regular preparation of comprehensive project progress reports (monthly, Quarter and final reports).
  • Perform other functions as requested by the immediate supervisor

 

Skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, Crop production, soil and water conservation, and climatology, or related field , agronomy, ,
  • 4 years’ experience in a similar field of activity
  • Excellent knowledge of political, security, social and cultural of the assigned environment
  • Excellent, reporting, presentation, analytical and networking skills
  • Ability to make quick, sound decisions when faced with highly challenging and sensitive matters
  • Good understanding of SHRA operations and mandate is an asset
  • Excellent command of English and Somali language
  • Computer proficiency especially in MS Office suite
