Job description
PSYCHOSOCIAL COUNSELLOR
Location: Togdheer & Sool Region
Diversity Action Network (DAN), a local NGO based in Hargeisa, is starting the implementation of a 3-month drought emergency for 6 IDPs in Togdheer and Sool regions, funded by UNHCR, on community-based protection through community mobilization, community-self-management, child protection and services to persons with specific needs for refugees, asylum seekers and other persons of concern from March to June 2023.
The Psychosocial Counsellor is responsible for the overall planning and providing of psychosocial support for the project including Persons of Concern (POC), refugees, and asylum seekers. S/he helps them solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. S/healso will help POC find services that are available in their community. The psychosocial counselor will work, as a team, with social workers, management staff, and physiotherapists.
The Psychosocial counselor will use a client-centered approach that respects the client’s needs.
Key deliverables: Provide individualized, holistic, and comprehensive case management to POC including intake assessment, goal setting, care plan development, weekly case plan development, progress monitoring, and referrals.
Her / His responsibilities include:
- Welcomes support, and listens to POC facing stressful life situations and challenges;
- Provide intake assessments of all cases in the Community-Based Protection (CBP)
- Helps clients to identify their problems and assists them to find their own solutions;
- Provide psychological support to cases referred by the team or community committees based on individual assessments.
- helps the client in finding and utilizing internal and external resources available;
- Helps POC cope more effectively with the problems of living;
- Participate in Promoting awareness of the rights of POC;
- Conducts regular home-to-home visits together with other team members including physiotherapists and social workers and provides some psychosocial counseling on their premises.
- Works closely with other project staff, Government stakeholders, and Refugees and asylum seekers committees for the realization of project objectives and goals;
- Take part in community meetings, and other coordination meetings as assigned;
- Produce and maintain accurate clinical records of the beneficiaries.
- Develop technical reports on specific cases identified during the individual psychological support sessions.
- Performs other, similar duties as assigned by the Project Manager;
Skills and qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychosocial Counselling and or Counselling or other related fields.
- 2 - 3 years of direct experience in PSS(Psychosocial support)
- Prior Team WorkExperience
- Excellent knowledge of Protection standards and basic principles.
- Good knowledge of psychosocial counseling (PSS)
- Fluency in Somali and English languages
- Excellent knowledge of basic facilitation skills.
- Excellent knowledge of safe identification and referral principles.
- Strong Excel and Word skills.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative.
- Passionate about the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
