1. About WRRS
Wamo Relief & Rehabilitation Services (WRRS) is a Somali humanitarian and development organization implementing integrated humanitarian and development programmes in Somalia, including health, nutrition, WASH, livelihoods, resilience, protection and community-based interventions.
Under the Integrated Emergency Health and Nutrition Services project in Qansax Dheere District, WRRS will deploy eight nurses including three nurses with specific responsibility for Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI).
2. Position Purpose
The Nurses will support the delivery of quality primary healthcare (PHC), maternal and newborn health, child health, immunization, growth monitoring, nutrition screening, health education and referral services at the supported health facilities.
The three EPI Nurses will have responsibility for routine immunization services, including vaccine administration, cold-chain management, immunization recording and reporting, and identification and follow-up of children who have missed scheduled vaccinations.
All nurses will work closely with the Clinical Officer, Health and Nutrition Officer, Health and Nutrition Manager, CHWs/FHWs and other facility-based staff to ensure integrated and quality service delivery.
3. Key Responsibilities
A. Primary Healthcare Services
- Provide quality nursing care to patients attending the supported health facilities.
- Support outpatient and primary healthcare services in accordance with Ministry of Health guidelines.
- Assist with patient assessment, basic clinical management and treatment as directed by the Clinical Officer.
- Monitor patients and promptly identify cases requiring clinical review or referral.
- Support infection prevention and control measures within the health facility.
- Maintain appropriate standards of patient care, dignity and confidentiality.
B. Maternal, Newborn and Child Health
- Support delivery of MNCH services, including ANC, PNC and child health services.
- Assist with maternal and newborn care according to approved protocols and scope of practice.
- Identify danger signs and complications and facilitate timely referral.
- Support routine child health services, including growth monitoring and health education.
- Provide appropriate counselling to mothers and caregivers on child health and preventive care.
C. Immunization and EPI Services
For the three designated EPI Nurses:
- Provide routine immunization services at assigned health facilities.
- Administer vaccines safely in accordance with the national immunization schedule and Ministry of Health protocols.
- Maintain and monitor the vaccine cold chain.
- Maintain accurate immunization registers, tally sheets, cards and other EPI documentation.
- Monitor vaccine stocks and report shortages or cold-chain concerns promptly.
- Identify children who have missed scheduled vaccinations and support defaulter tracing.
- Work with CHWs/FHWs to promote immunization and mobilize eligible children and caregivers.
- Support immunization data compilation, reporting and verification.
- Participate in outreach immunization activities where required.
For all nurses:
- Integrate immunization promotion and referral into routine health and child health services.
- Educate caregivers on the importance of vaccination and completion of the immunization schedule.
- Identify children requiring vaccination and refer or direct them to appropriate EPI services.
D. Growth Monitoring and Nutrition Screening
- Conduct or support growth monitoring for children under five.
- Integrate nutrition screening into routine facility-based services.
- Screen children and eligible women using appropriate nutrition screening procedures.
- Identify children with signs of acute malnutrition and ensure appropriate referral.
- Refer children with SAM to OTP or Stabilization Centre services, as appropriate.
- Refer children with MAM to TSFP in accordance with programme protocols.
- Provide basic nutrition and infant and young child feeding counselling to caregivers.
- Coordinate with nutrition staff and CHWs/FHWs for follow-up of referred cases.
E. Health Education and Community Engagement
- Provide health education to patients, caregivers and community members.
- Promote key messages on maternal and child health, immunization, nutrition, hygiene and disease prevention.
- Support community awareness and outreach activities.
- Work with CHWs/FHWs to strengthen community-level identification, referral and follow-up.
- Encourage caregivers to seek timely healthcare for children and other vulnerable household members.
F. Referral and Follow-Up
- Identify patients requiring additional or specialized care.
- Facilitate timely referral to the appropriate health facility.
- Ensure referrals are properly documented.
- Support follow-up of referred patients in coordination with CHWs/FHWs.
- Communicate relevant clinical information to receiving facilities where appropriate.
G. Records, Reporting and Data Quality
- Maintain accurate and complete nursing and patient records.
- Ensure timely completion of facility registers and reporting tools.
- Accurately record immunization, growth monitoring, nutrition screening and referral data.
- Support routine health and nutrition reporting to the facility supervisor and project team.
- Participate in data verification and quality improvement activities.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and programme information.
H. Quality, Safeguarding and Accountability
- Comply with WRRS policies, Ministry of Health guidelines and relevant humanitarian standards.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
- Uphold patient confidentiality, dignity and informed consent.
- Apply protection, safeguarding, PSEA and accountability principles in service delivery.
- Ensure equitable access to services regardless of gender, age, disability or other vulnerability.
Report safeguarding or protection concerns through established confidential mechanisms
Skills and qualifications
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid professional registration/licence where applicable.
- Relevant experience working as a nurse in a health facility, preferably in humanitarian or development settings.
- Experience in primary healthcare, MNCH, child health and community health services.
- Experience in nutrition screening and referral is an advantage.
- Ability to maintain accurate clinical and programme records.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary health team.
- Fluency in Somali and working knowledge of English.
For EPI Nurse positions, additional experience in:
- Routine immunization and EPI service delivery.
- Vaccine administration and safe injection practices.
- Vaccine cold-chain management.
- EPI recording, reporting and data management.
- Defaulter tracing and community immunization mobilization.
- Immunization outreach activities.
Desirable:
- Experience in integrated health and nutrition programmes.
- Experience with Ministry of Health/Health Cluster programmes.
- Knowledge of IMCI and child health protocols.
- Experience with DHIS2, EPI reporting or other health information systems.
- Previous experience in SHF/CBPF or other donor-funded humanitarian programmes.

6. Reporting Line
The Nurses will work under the supervision of the Clinical Officer and/or designated facility supervisor, with technical oversight from the Health and Nutrition Officer and Health and Nutrition Manager.
EPI Nurses will also coordinate closely with the project health team and relevant Ministry of Health immunization focal points on routine immunization activities.
