The Foundation has carried out numerous projects in East Africa, with a focus on Ethiopia, Somaliland and Rwanda. The key themes for the philanthropic side of the Foundation are education, health, water and agriculture. At the end of 2019, the Foundation started its Pharo Ventures franchise to prioritise sectors where the Foundation believes a real impact can be made by establishing self-sustaining businesses that focus on job creation.

The  Pharo  Foundation Education Programme  is committed to raising students’  achievement and

implementing learning experiences that contribute to the future skills needed for higher education. The

curriculum and pedagogy are being used to promote the development of students’ 21st- Century skills. This is achieved through the consistent use of rigorous learning outcomes and the alignment of supporting pedagogy and assessment.

The Pharo Secondary School, Sheikh is a leading boarding school located in the Sahil Region, in the town of Sheikh between the port city of Berbera and Burcoa, Somaliland. The town of Sheikh has a pleasant cool climate all year round due to its high altitude. The school is renowned for its academic excellence and; secure and caring environment in which students of all abilities can experience success and achieve their full potential within a broad and balanced curriculum. The school is currently following the Edexcel International Curriculum; London University-based IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), and the Somaliland National Curriculum. The aim is to prepare students to become respectful contributing members of the communities in which they live. The school counts many prominent politicians and other key officials among its graduates.

Headquartered in London, the Foundation has an operational Head Office in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Assosa), Somaliland (Hargeisa) and Rwanda (Kigali) with further expansion plans in East Africa.

Position: Chemistry Teacher

Location: Sheikh, Somaliland

Reporting to: VP of Academics

Contract Type: Fixed Term (One Year)

Position Summary

We are searching for a dependable chemistry teacher to join our faculty. The chemistry teacher’s responsibilities include teaching students about chemical elements, compounds, and reactions, supervising investigations, and experiments, developing rapport, and maintaining good relationships with students and school management. As a boarding school teaching life extends well beyond the time spent with students in a classroom. Tutorials,

field trips, and ongoing engaging school and community-wide activities also form part of a teacher’s responsibilities.

To be successful as a chemistry teacher, you should demonstrate a sound knowledge of chemistry. Outstanding candidates are able to apply scientific principles to real-life situations and can successfully teach students with different interests and aptitudes.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Leads all activities within the assigned Class.

  • Prepares lesson plans and outlines in accordance with the curriculum guidelines or requirements of the school or government.
  • Teaches lessons and facilitates or supervises a variety of non-academic activities. Ensures all necessary preparations are made prior to each lesson.
  • Participates in all student activities inside the school.

Creates a stimulating learning environment.

  • Maintains a positive degree of discipline inside and outside the classroom to create a safe, secure, and appropriate environment for learning.
  • Promotes a warm, supportive, non-threatening ethos in which the students find learning enjoyable and stimulating, and in which respect and cooperation are emphasized.
  • Uses creative teaching methods.
  • Creates a lively, stimulating atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Maintains the classroom in a neat and tidy condition to create an environment conducive to learning.

Ensures the educational development of each student.

  • Provides individual attention to each student, monitoring their educational progress and taking appropriate corrective action as necessary.
  • Conducts academic support programmes to meet the educational needs of each student.
  • Develops and implements homework programmes which may include project work, extra reading, or other assignments.
  • Teaches Chemistry in all classes.
  • Prepares online lessons (if required)
  • Prepares progress reports for each student as required by the principal and vice-principal detailing the student’s academic progress as well as overall development.
  • Keeps attendance registers, grade records and any other records required by the school.

Acts as a participating member of Pharo Foundation

  • Actively participates in all school meetings and school activities.
  • Maintains close contact with parents discussing the student’s academic progress and general development.

General

  • Performs administrative or other extra duties as required by the principal.
  • Supports students in extra-curricular clubs and activities.
  • Assumes responsibility for additional duties in the boarding school.
  • Assists in the school’s involvement in supporting the Sheikh community.
  • Assists in monitoring the student boarding section of the school.

 

Skills and qualifications

Qualification Requirements

  • The ideal person should possess at minimum a Bachelor’s in Science/ Bachelor’s in Education Degree in the specific subject teaching areas of Chemistry. A Master’s Degree will be an added advantage.
  • A Post Graduate Teaching Diploma in the specific subject of specialisation will be considered an added advantage.
  • Have a minimum of Five (5) years’ teaching experience in Chemistry using the A-level syllabus.
  • Passion for the subject matter and teaching, with a commitment to student success.
  • Capable of developing and presenting appropriate, creative, and adaptable curriculum.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Energetic, with a strong work ethic and of good moral character: honest, trustworthy, and dependable must be willing to teach in Sheikh.
  • Experience working in an internationally based organisation or international school setting will be considered an added advantage.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Email usage, Google Suite, internet searching and willing to learn new computer skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills in Somali and fluency in English
