This is achieved through the consistent use of rigorous learning outcomes and the alignment of supporting pedagogy and assessment.

 

The Pharo Secondary School, Sheikh is a leading boarding school located in the Sahil Region, in the town of Sheikh between the port city of Berbera and Burcoa, Somaliland.  The town of Sheikh has a pleasant cool climate all year round due to its high altitude. The school is renowned for its academic excellence and; secure and caring environment in which students of all abilities can experience success and achieve their full potential within a broad and balanced curriculum. The aim is to prepare students to become respectful contributing members of the communities in which they live.  The school counts many prominent politicians and other key officials among its graduates.

 

The school has 300 students from Form 1 to Form 4 with academic facilities that consist of fully equipped classrooms, science laboratories, a library, assembly and lecture halls, boys’ and girls’ dormitories, a dining hall and a clinic. The school is currently following two curriculums, UK Pearson Edexcel International IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) curriculum and the Somaliland National Curriculum.

Position summary

 

We are seeking a passionate teacher, who enjoys teaching the English Language and excels in their ability to reach and support students. The ideal candidate is one who takes endless pride and countless hours to design inspiring and engaging English Language lesson plans and teaching units. We seek a compassionate, hardworking, resilient, and capable individual who works well with others and would enjoy living at the Pharo Secondary School Sheikh campus, in a clean and modern living accommodation set-up.

Reporting to:          Vice Principal of Academics

Location:                Sheikh, Somaliland

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working in close collaboration with the principal, the English Teacher will be responsible for designing and providing English lessons and learning opportunities that are engaging, show a depth of teacher-subject competence and allow students to develop and demonstrate English speaking and writing skills.
  • Regularly incorporate computer technology into the students’ English learning experience as appropriate.
  • Regularly monitor and track each student’s English proficiency and provide the necessary support to ensure overall development.
  • Help students improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills via individual and group sessions.
  • Regularly monitor in-class discipline.
  • Provide counselling and support by working together with school leadership and other teachers.
  • Actively participate and deliver tutorials, co-curricular activities, and other activities conducted in a boarding school environment and as stipulated by the Ministry of Education.
  • Supporting the recruitment process of new students for the Secondary School as appropriate.

Skills and qualifications

  • The ideal person should possess at a minimum a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and preferably specialising in English Language or English Literature. A Master’s Degree will be an added advantage.
  • Possession of a nationally or internationally recognised TEFL certificate is a requisite for this role.
  • Have a minimum of five (5) years of English Language teaching experience at the Secondary School level.
  • Experience working in an internationally based organisation or international school setting.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, Email usage, Google Suite, internet searching, and willing to learn new computer skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills in English.

  • Dedicated team player with demonstrable experience in problem-solving.
  • Committed to and passionate about teaching the English Language at the Secondary School level and highly motivated towards student development and growth.
  • Willingness to teach and support students in their English language development. Must be of good moral character, honest, trustworthy, and dependable.
  • Possesses and continually develops a working knowledge of national curriculum programmes and frameworks.
  • Ability to assess and record student development, while identifying areas that need attention and improvement.
  • Ability to provide a safe, positive learning environment for students.
