JOB DESCRIPTION HEALTH AND NUTRITION OFFICER - SOMALIA
Job Title: Health and Nutrition Officer
Reports to: Health and Nutrition Coordinator
Jobe No.: SHACDO/HN/001/26
Job Location: Wanlaweyn District Lower Shabelle Region, Somalia, with a possibility of movement to
other project areas (Afgoye, Mogadishu, Warmahan, etc.)
Contract type Fixed term with possibility of extension depending on fund availability.
BACKGROUND: Shabelle Community Development organization (SHACDO) is a Humanitarian, Nonprofit and non-governmental organization dedicated to responding to humanitarian
emergences through provision of life-saving support mechanisms in partnership with
national and international role players, promoting community resilience, emergency
response, peace and stability, advocate against all kinds of violence, initiate long term
and short-term development projects. SHACDO prioritizes identifying the most
appropriate targets for their projects where the poorest communities are suffering most.
Job Purpose: The Health and Nutrition Officer will be responsible for planning, implementing,
monitoring, and reporting on health and nutrition activities in Wanlawayn to ensure
quality service delivery in line with national guidelines, donor requirements, project
priorities and SHACDO standards. He/she will provide & lead technical support to facility
level as part of health & Nutrition system strengthening.
Main Duties &
Responsibilities:
Program Implementation
 Implement health and nutrition activities in line with approved project plans and
targets.
 Ensure quality delivery of essential primary health care and nutrition services.
 Support CMAM, IYCF, and community outreach activities as applicable.
 Conduct regular field supervision and on-the-job mentoring of health and
nutrition staff.
Coordination and Collaboration
 Coordinate with relevant government health authorities, partners, and
community structures.
 Participate in health and nutrition coordination meetings at district and regional
levels.

 Strengthen referral pathways between community, nutrition, and health services.
Monitoring, Reporting, and Documentation
 Collect, compile, analyse, and submit accurate and timely weekly and monthly
activity and narrative reports, ensuring alignment with approved work plans,
indicators, and donor reporting requirements.
 Prepare monthly narrative reports that clearly document progress against
targets, challenges, lessons learned, and recommendations for program
improvement.
 Check medical & nutrition protocols are followed, proper admission and
discharge criteria, appropriate frequency measurements adherence to
standardized treatment protocols.
 technical support and supervision to community-level iCCM staffs in case
management, monitoring, reporting, to ensure quality service delivery and data
accuracy.
 Develop and document success stories and human-interest case studies,
highlighting program achievements and impact on communities, supported by
high-quality, consent-based photographs in line with organizational branding,
safeguarding, and visibility guidelines.
 Ensure the proper and consistent use of approved monitoring tools, registers,
databases, and reporting templates at facility and community levels.
 Conduct routine data quality checks, verification, and validation to ensure
accuracy, completeness, and reliability of program data.
 Support the timely submission of quality reports to management and donors, and
contribute to learning, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making.
 Any other duties assigned.
Supply and
Logistics Support
 Forecast, request, and monitor health and nutrition supplies and medicines.
 Coordinate with the logistics team to ensure timely delivery and proper storage
of supplies.
 Ensure rational use and accountability of drugs and nutrition commodities.
 Prepare and submit timely supply reports to management and relevant
stakeholders.
Community
Engagement and
Accountability
 Promote community participation and accountability to affected populations.
 Support community mobilization, health education, and behaviour change
activities.
 Ensure feedback and complaint mechanisms are functional and accessible

Skills and qualifications

Qualifications and
Experience
Education
 Bachelor’s degree in public health, Nursing, Nutrition, Medicine, or a related field.
Experience
 Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in health and nutrition programming,
preferably with NGOs.
 Experience working in humanitarian or emergency settings is an added
advantage.
 Knowledge and previous familiarity in the target and overall context is essential.
Skills and Competencies
 Strong knowledge of health and nutrition guidelines, standards, and protocols,
with the ability to apply them effectively in field implementation.
 Good report-writing, data analysis, and documentation skills, including the ability
to produce clear weekly, monthly, and narrative reports.
 Computer literacy with demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel (data
entry, basic formulas, tables, and summaries), and PowerPoint for reporting and
presentations; familiarity with email, internet-based platforms, and basic data
management systems is an added advantage.
 Ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage multiple tasks, and
perform effectively under pressure and in challenging environments.
 Demonstrated ability to lead and support surveys, conduct rapid Health and
Nutrition assessments, multi-sectoral humanitarian needs assessments in
collaboration with partners.
 Strong communication, coordination, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to
work collaboratively with staff, partners, and community stakeholders.
 Proficiency in Somali and working knowledge of English, both written and
spoken, for effective communication and reporting.
