- Background
WHH in partnership with Candlelight seek to engage a qualified consultant to conduct practical scientific research on Prosopis hay. The planned activity is aimed at promoting utilization and control of Prosopis under a BMZ funded project. WHH and Candlelight want to establish if Prosopis hay can be utilized in small, medium and large scale to contribute to animal nutrition and animal survival during drought. The project targets Awdaal, Maroodi-jex and Togdheer Regions of Somaliland.
- Objective of the consultancy
The objective of the consultancy is to conduct practical laboratory and field analysis on nutritional value of Prosopis hay (only dried leaves, no woody elements) on livestock and document the processes and key findings. The report will be used to inform activities related to use of invasive plants specifically Prosopis control under SOM 1038 project (Sustainable income through gender, sensitive value chains, sustainable WASH and nutrition systems and climate resilience building in Somaliland)
Please note that WHH will provide adequate amounts of shade-dried Prosopis hay for the practical research.
Scope/ focus
- The potentiality of Prosopis hay as an alternative animal fodder
- The pros and cons of use of Prosopis hay as regular or drought emergency animal fodder
- The nutrition value / content of Prosopis hay
- Well documented scientifically proven benefits or side-effects of Prosopis hay on livestock
- Methodology
- Practical scientific research – feeding an appropriate sample size with moderate quantities of Prosopis hay and measuring weight or milk yield changes against control animals.
- Laboratory tests – nutrition content of Prosopis green leaves and dry leaves.
- Expected deliverables:
A detailed laboratory research report capturing effects of feeding livestock on Prosopis hay through analysis of carcasses.
Skills and qualifications
- At least MSC in livestock feed and nutrition related or its equivalent from a credited institution.
- Must have worked under livestock feed and nutrition programme for at least eight years
- The ideal candidate should be familiar with prosopis juliflora in Somaliland context
- Experience in coordinating/conducting laboratory tests for fodder nutrients.
- Previous experience in conducting similar research is an added advantage.

Basis of Award
Applications will be evaluated based on the following evaluation criteria:
- Technical proposal including a track record of similar studies (60%)
- Financial proposal including any applicable taxes (40%)
- The top 4-6 candidates will be called for an oral interview and/or presentation of his/her proposal to WHH
