Course Overview:

This two-week course offers a practical and beginner-friendly introduction to data analysis using Microsoft Excel. The first week includes face-to-face, instructor-led sessions, where

participants will learn how to use Excel spreadsheets, formulas, and functions; clean and wrangle data; perform statistical analysis; explore PivotTables; and visualize data for better decision-making. In Week 2, learners will complete a hands-on Capstone Project that reinforces the skills they've gained through a real-world data analysis scenario. Upon successful completion of the project, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Learning Outcomes:

●​ Navigate Excel’s interface and use it efficiently for data tasks

●​ Clean and organize datasets using built-in Excel tools and functions 

●​ Perform basic descriptive statistics using the Excel Analysis ToolPak

●​ Apply logical, lookup, and array functions for advanced analysis

●​ Create PivotTables and PivotCharts for summarizing data

 ●​ Visualize insights using charts and conditional formatting

●​ Complete a full-cycle data analysis project in Excel from start to finish

Course Outline:

This course is structured into 8 hands-on modules, plus a capstone project:

●​    Module 1: Introduction to Excel Spreadsheets: Get hands-on with Excel by understanding its interface, entering and editing data, and learning formatting basics. Master essential keyboard shortcuts and explore free web access to Excel.

●​    Module 2: Introduction to Data and Data Analysis: Discover what data is, the differences between data and information, and various data types and sources. Learn the basics of data analysis.

●​     Module 3: Getting Started with Excel Formulas and Functions: Dive into formulas and commonly used Excel functions like AVERAGE, MAX, and COUNT. Understand the difference between relative and absolute references and leverage time-saving Excel hacks.

●​     Module 4: Data Cleaning in Excel: Improve data quality by importing .CSV/.TXT files, removing blanks and duplicates, and fixing formatting issues. Use Excel tools like Flash Fill, TRIM(), PROPER(), Find & Replace, and Go To Special to streamline cleanup.

Apply data validation and standardize values for consistent, analysis-ready datasets

●​  Module 5: Getting Started with Statistical Analysis in Excel: Install the Analysis

Toolpak and start using Excel for descriptive statistics. Apply data validation and standardize values for consistent, analysis-ready datasets.

●​     Module 6: Analyzing Data Using Functions: Apply Excel’s powerful logical and lookup functions such as IF, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, and INDEX+MATCH. Work with arrays and advanced functions like FILTER(), UNIQUE(), and SORT().

●​  Module 7: Summarize and Analyse Data with Pivot Tables: Understand the power of

Pivot Tables for summarizing and analysing large datasets. Learn to filter, format, and visualize data using Pivot Charts for deeper insights.

●​  Module 8: Data Visualization and Conditional Formatting: Use conditional formatting

to highlight patterns and trends. Create impactful charts — bar, line, pie, histogram, scatter — and follow smart design tips for clear communication.

●​  Capstone Project: Real-World Data Analysis in Excel: Apply everything you've

learned by working on a real-world dataset. Clean, analyze, and visualize the data using Excel tools, then present your insights.

About the course instructor

Mukhtar Abdi is a seasoned GIS and Data Analytics Expert with extensive experience in both real-world projects and teaching. He holds an MSc in Water Resources Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia and a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Hargeisa.

Mukhtar has worked as a hydrologist and researcher at the Hargeisa Water Agency. He is currently an independent GIS, Data Analytics, and Information Management Consultant based in Hargeisa, and is involved in various projects across different organizations and firms.

A passionate advocate for teaching and knowledge-sharing, Mukhtar regularly conducts training sessions on GIS, field data collection, and data analysis. He also runs a YouTube channel dedicated to educating Somali students on GIS and Data Analysis.
