About Qatar Red Crescent Society – Somalia.
In Somalia, Qatar Red Crescent has been running intensive relief, resilience and recovery programs from 2006. Qatar Red Crescent Somalia works across several sectors including WASH, Health, Food Security, and Livelihoods with integration, wherever feasible.
Project Background:
The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has recently secured 2024 Somalia Humanitarian Fund allocations to implement an emergency lifesaving WASH intervention targeting vulnerable internally displaced persons (IDPs) and rural villages in Kismayu. This initiative is part of a broader response to address the urgent needs stemming from the recent influx of IDPs and the impact of environmental challenges, including potential flooding due to El Niño. The project aims to respond to critical gaps in water, sanitation, and hygiene services exacerbated by the displacement of communities and the destruction of essential infrastructure.
The intervention will focus on ensuring equal access to WASH services for the elderly, individuals with disabilities, children and women. QRCS plans to purchase and distribute 1,000 WASH supplies, including water purification tablets, hygiene kits, and sanitation materials, strategically targeting areas with the greatest need. Community representatives, particularly women and girls, will be engaged in the planning and distribution process to ensure that safety and accessibility concerns are adequately addressed in collaboration with local authorities. The intervention will focus on ensuring equal access to WASH services for the elderly, individuals with disabilities, children, and women.
This effort will ultimately enable vulnerable community members get to access adequate WASH supplies, thereby reducing health risks associated with poor sanitation and improving overall public health in the community. Regular supervision by QRCS field officers will ensure the proper execution of distribution activities, reinforcing QRCS’s commitment to delivering effective and sustainable WASH solutions.
