  1. Background

CARE Somalia intends to find better ways to leverage collective sectoral expertise and long-standing relationships with communities to tackle the challenges facing agricultural practicing families in Somalia.  Unpredictable weather patterns have negative impact on farmers’ production.  Presently, there are limited pro-poor finance products for smallholder producers in rural areas especially those in hard-to-reach rural settings.  The Success of the agriculturally-led economic development approach in Somalia relies heavily on equipping farmers with necessary skills and knowledge to allow them entry to the market system, and engage government, the private sector and other enabling enterprises

This consultancy call is hence a first of many efforts to strengthen the economic resilience of Small holder farmers by facilitating the designing and provision of tailor made pro-poor financial products to boost agriculture production CARE Somalia is currently operational in the northern regions of Puntland and Somaliland.  For more information, visit https://care.org/our-work/where-we-work/somalia/

  1. Objective of Assignment

The objective of the success stories and case studies are to document and showcase the on-going project activities to support communities in the targeted areas, impact and sustainability of activities. The final documents (success stories and case studies) will serve as a tool to advocate for scale up of innovation of the program as well as share achievements with both the donor and project partners.  

  1. The Scope of Work

The consultant will be responsible for producing a 2 success stories and 2 case studies (on thematic areas:VSLA & revolved fund loan (RFL), Early as Contract farming scheme at community level), each case study and a success story must accompany photos from the field to add credibility to the story. The consultant will conduct the works under the direction of SOMREP-Afgoi Program Manager and CARE’s Communication Team.

  1. Methodology

The consultant will develop its own envisaged methodology for this assignment based on the scope described above. However the consultant will be expected to:

  • Literature review: review of relevant program documents (e.g. first phase final report, annual reports, knowledge documentation, second phase annual reports, communication materials) as well as other relevant materials to the program.
  • Consultation meeting with relevant SomReP CARE staff, members of core team and communication team. CARE will provide an overview of different thematic areas and its activities to help familiarize the consultant, including list of documents and other materials for literature review. Consultant will present the result of their literature review and list out the potential characters, communities and sites for the success story collection and case studies.
  • Conduct field work in the selected communities with SomreP program and SomReP staff where applicable. This will include focus group discussions, interviews, observations, and visits to beneficiaries to elicit their views.
  • Prepare success stories by analyzing and presenting relevant information about project implementation.
  • Produce the text, photographs, and infographics highlighting the success stories and including voices of beneficiaries and other stakeholders.
  • Preparation of draft and submit success stories for initial feedback.
  • Submit revised version to SomReP CARE Program manager.
  • Feedback collection and refinement of case studies, success and photo stories.
  • Submit final version of success stories and case studies in English along with infographics that resonate with the information and high quality photos where necessary. Case studies should leverage quotes through the text and often use visuals to illustrate points.
  1. Roles and Responsibilities of CARE International
  • Provide transport for all travels and visits to project areas
  • Make all preparations related to community entry such as identifying potential activities or cases for documentation, setting appointments with communities, getting the consent of interviewees, etc.
  • Provide the consultant with the relevant literature i.e. program reports, monthly report, activity reports, other pertinent reports that match with SomReP activities.

7) Deliverables

  • An inception report demonstrating understanding of the tasks in the ToR and how the consultant proposes to accomplish the required tasks.
  • Two (2) success stories and Two (2) case studies in a story narrative written in a creative way supported by quality photos and strong bites.
  • All deliverables should be submitted to SomReP program manager within 2 weeks of signing of contract.

8)Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant experience in writing, editing, and documenting human interest stories for different level audience is prerequisite.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize relevant information and develop highly analytical reports.
  • Excellent editing skills and ability to integrate human interest with statistics and technical reports to present credible content.
  • Has Bachelor of science Communication & Public relation
  • High sense of journalistic ethics and in-depth understanding of resilience programming.
  • Fluent in English and Somali (spoken and written).
  • Ability to deliver products on time against tight deadlines.
