The African Academy for Professionals (AAP) is glad to present a new training on learning Environmental Reporting Skills for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), businesses & public institutions) and individuals interested in these skills.

  1. Objectives:

In addition to informing and raising awareness among people in society, other environmental reporting objectives include:

  1. Generating debate on issues related to the environment.
  2. Providing synergies to topics ignored in the general media.
  3. Creating synergies among members of the public, communicators, institutions, NGO’s and any agents involved in environmental issues.
  4. Promoting the approval and improvement of environmental policies.

    • Principle functions of environmental reporting
    • Necessary components of environmental reporting
    • General reporting principles of environmental reporting.
  1. Natural disasters and the role of media
    • Guidelines for reporting on natural disasters
    • Media SOP’s for reporting on disasters
    • Role of media before disasters
    • Role of media during disasters
    • Role of media after disasters.
  • Field work:
  1. VISIT TO SOME LOCAL POLLUTED SITE
  • Human activities related to urbanization and industrialization have led to large scale pollution of the environment. Liquid waste disposals have also led to environmental pollution and degradation. A visit to some industrial area or degraded land area will be very useful to obtain first hand information about the same.
  1. STUDY OF RIVER ENVIRONMENT
  • Background data: Note down the name of the river or tributary, its place of origin and its course or route. Find out whether the river is perennial or seasonal in nature.
  • Water quality observations
  • Observations on aquatic life:
  • Look for different types of life forms.
  • Draw a food-web diagram that would be present in the river
  • Uses: How is the river water used? Prepare a list of the uses.
  • Human impacts: what are the major impacts caused by human beings in your area on the river? Have you learnt of any major incident e.g. massive fish death or cattle death or skin problems to human beings consuming the water?
